Being honest, I’m not the biggest fan of jargon. Such as Personal Branding. Buzz words. Semantics. Then again, I’m also not the biggest fan of this cup of coffee that I am currently drinking. Which tastes like potpourri. But that’s a different gibberish story. Anyways, jargon tends to annoy me. Such as Generation Y. Generation X was good. Y just seems like a lazy progression. What happens after Z then? And wouldn’t Generation Why Not be more apt?
See, one of the reasons I may not like jargon and all that, is that at times people tend to become obsessed with whatever the buzz phrase may be at that particular time. Let’s take Personal Branding. What’s the concept? What does the term mean? And what do I do? I must get it right! What’s the right way?! A lot of the time, a person can become delirious about which way to go about something. Read a lot. And then do very little. Forgetting about trial and error. But they'll always be up to date with the latest buzz word or phrase. Able to tell you the history all about it. Great. Thanks for that.
Perhaps I’ve had my fill of jargon from my previous way of life. Doing a masters in E-Business tends to fill you up with enough waffle to keep you ticking over. Add in running a nightclub promotions company (basically, spoofing and fluffing) and you are close to an over-dose of constant jargon. Thankfully, I left all that behind in Ireland. My previous life. No more. Time to pursue what it is that I actually want to do. No more having to brand my companies or be nice just for the sake of business. Hollywood is where I need to be to do what I want to do? L.A here I come! Jargon, personal branding, semantics, we’re over, finished, no more!
Eh yeah, I got away from all that. Left it all behind. Seeing as none of that goes on in Hollywood. Possibly the home of personal branding. People shoving. Pushing. Branding. Expecting you to do the same. On a daily basis. Day and night. Always on. Climb the ladder. Until you can reach a plateau. Nobody here cares if you’re not a fan of talking about yourself and your strong points. You prefer to be coy? Well they’ll just find someone else then. What? You wont go to the effort to find out what I’m all about? No?! I have about 3 minutes to convince you of my projects and worth? Great.
Pretty soon you get used to people not greeting you with “How are you?” but instead “Who are you?” Initially, I joked around. Who am I? What do I do? I’m close to being homeless and I'm unemployed. And yourself? Just to gauge how fake they were being. Some laughed. Most ran. At the end of the day though, there is a reason why they want to know about your credentials. Your brand. What do you bring to the table? What do you do? DJ. Play here, here and here. Their interest peaks. Writer. Book deal. Interest peaks some more. Stand-up, here’s a reel. Meeting arranged. That's some of what I do. Here’s me. My personal branding. 24/7. Kind of annoying. Unfortunately, it seems, kind of has to be done. Although, I’m also still drinking this cup of coffee that tastes like potpourri, so what do I know?
Great post! I don't understand Personal Branding's overwhelming popularity either. We must have been on the same wavelength this week, I wrote a similar post for friday:
