This time of year, it’s already nearly impossible to pick your poison, whether of the beverage or confectionary variety, and it just got harder. Tuesday is National Cupcake Day.
Gen Y’ers associate a lot of memories with cupcakes. The first is all sorts of innocent fun. Most of us can remember how exciting it was to bring treats to your whole class on your birthday. More often than not, those treats were cupcakes and you got to hold the one with a candle in it while all your friends sang “Happy Birthday.”
Flash forward to adulthood. Suddenly cupcakes have a resurgence of popularity among Generation Y. (Some of that has to be attributed to "Sex and the City" and our gal Carrie’s affinity for retro cupcakes at the famous Magnolia Bakery on Bleecker Street in New York City.) In true "Sex and the City" fashion, somehow cupcakes have become not just a delicious treat, but a sensual one that’s somewhat revered and universal.
It seems only appropriate to explore this craving on National Cupcake Day. Take for instance my friend Gabriella. She hearts cupcakes in extraordinary amounts, going so far as to dress up as a cupcake for Halloween. Of course our mutual friend Mark is all over this. He seems to have a never-ending stream of cupcake jokes, comments, pictures (AKA innuendos).
Okay, I think I may have just figured it out. The Gen Y obsession with cupcakes is a wee bit different than the innocent fun from elementary school birthday parties (imagine that!) Gen Y women like cupcakes because it’s a smaller and cute portion of a universally good treat, cake (and who doesn’t like cake?) Gen Y men, on the other hand, just like it when women eat cupcakes…or in the case of Gabriella and Mark, when they look like one.
The cupcake the obsession can’t be placed solely on Gen Y shoulders. Smashingly successful cupcake bakeries are popping up all over the place, in every major city. Cupcakes are becoming the latest trend at weddings too.
As such, celebrate National Cupcake Day appropriately. Chocolate, lemon, red velvet, with or without sprinkles, doesn’t matter. Have a cupcake on Tuesday. (FYI, Mark, it’s meant to be of the kind from the bakery, but whatever floats your boat).
