“That is not true in my situation, I am the exception to the rule”. This can be frustrating, but it’s undeniable. There are always exceptions. What are the exceptions?
I have always been fascinated by the saying that there are exceptions to every rule. It happens almost everyday. You are talking about a certain topic and make a sweeping statement that holds true in most situations only to have someone say “That is not true in my situation, I am the exception to the rule”. This can be frustrating, but it’s undeniable. There are always exceptions. What are the exceptions? Do the exceptions really matter? Could they apply to you and I? Lets explore by looking at some common universal rules.
Rule: Quitters never prosper.
Exception: Bill Gates quit Harvard and prospered immensely.
Rule: Never wear white after Labor day. (This is probably not a universal rule)
Exception: Brides wear white year round.
Rule: Don’t run with scissors
Exception: What if there is an emergency where you need to get somewhere quick with a pair of scissors?
Rule: An apple a day keeps the doctor away
Exception: I eat an apple a day and I still get sick.
Rule: Never say never.
Exception: Should you never say “I will never smoke crack?”
Rule: Never give up.
Exception: Give up if it is an imminent threat to your life.
As we can see from these few examples, there are exceptions to all rules. This begs the question, do the exceptions really matter? I would argue that NO they do not. Most exceptions are narrow, overly specific, and applicable only to one person or situation. If exceptions were generally more important than rules then would we not say “There are rules for every exception”? The rules are what matter, the exceptions are just distractions. As soon as someone comes up with a universal rule, there will be someone who has come up with an exception. It is human nature to search for the exceptions and that is a rule with no exception. (Or is it?) What is your favorite exception to the rules?
