I believe in starting my day out by taking the time to brew fresh coffee. It is the pause before the storm. I love the sound my coffee machine makes as it brews. It reminds me of the way my grandparents coffee percolator used to sound every morning when I would visit them growing up. (Percolators make terrible coffee by the way, they just Coffee2sound cool) I look forward to the smell of coffee brewing. There is nothing like coming into the kitchen in the morning and smelling the coffee, it smells like…victory. Pouring the first cup and taking the first sip is what it’s all about. Pouring the second cup is just never as exciting as the first. (Is anything ever as exciting the second time?) The flavor of coffee is bitter. Some might say it is an acquired taste. I am not going to disagree with this, but I have to say that I have acquired the taste and it is way up there on my list of great flavors. It all depends on the beans that you purchase. If you’re making coffee with Yuban, than you get what you deserve. If you’re drinking Starbucks Christmas Blend than you know what good coffee is. Last and not least I love the caffeine effect. Without caffeine, coffee is just not the same. (Decaf) I have friends who say “I don’t like being addicted to anything, I don’t like being dependent on something to start my day”. I agree. I would not want to be addicted to alcohol and have to drink a shot of whiskey to start my day. I would certainly not want to do a line of coke to start my day. I am glad I do not have to trot out into the cold to light up my first cigarette every morning. I am very happy to drink my first cup of coffee every morning. I am not ashamed to admit that I have to start my day with caffeine. How much coffee do I drink you ask? It depends. If a friend is over and we are talking and drinking coffee then consuming a whole pot is not unusual. If I am heading out to work, I just fill up a mug and hit the road. I typically have coffee in the morning and then mid morning and then the afternoon. Last call is at 3:30PM. I never drink caffeine past 4PM because I hate tossing and turning in bed and thinking about the next day and that first cup…

I only have a cup in the morning. If i'm out with a friend, i might have another. However, the morning cup is quintessential to my not turning into a raging so-and-so the rest of the day :)

It's my only addiction. I kicked sugar already, so I'll be darned if someone would try and take away the thread that laces the rest of my day together :)

I know I'm totally addicted to coffee (and not the drip kind, but the real strong espresso), but I refuse to start my day with it - the whole "I don't want it to run me" attitude. However, I'll never give it up and decaf is a total waste of time (why bother). My favorite is an afternoon walk to the coffee shop with coworkers to the little independent coffee place down the street. And I am lucky to be able to drink it late in the day and sleep soundly. I agree that compared to any other addictions you might have (including sugar) this is one of least evils. It can actually be good for you.

This is a great post. I also make coffee first thing in the morning and love the smell of coffee (thanks for the YouTube ref. - a memorable line in a memorable movie and the association of smells). I don't agree with your assessment of perked coffee. Even though I have a drip coffee maker, I recently had perked coffee over at a friend's house and didn't notice it to be terrible. But whatever, I have only a few addictions and I don't mind coffee (with caffeine) to be one of them.

Also speaking of memorable lines, the line from Apocalypse Now made the list in a YouTube video titled 'AFI's 100 Years, 100 Movie Quotes (Musical Montage)' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=594Oxq4c0XA&feature=player_embedded .

I suspect that I am ADD, and I just can't concentrate without caffeine. My drug delivery method of choice is actually Diet Coke (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2537/4128553659_5c5a10ec55.jpg), but I make good use of the free coffee here at work.

By 9:00 AM I've usually consumed at least 48 oz of diet coke (2 cans and a large McDonalds Diet Coke with minimal ice) and 24 oz of coffee.

Probably a large part of the caffeine effect is just overcoming my withdrawal addiction and getting back to normal. But I simply can't focus without it.

Tasmanian aborigines had an even tougher time of it than Māori in New Zealand already Europeans came to stay. But it’s arresting to see parallels to the Ngāi Tahu acquaintance – intermarriage, and the adaptation of muttonbirding on adopted islands through abounding generations . Those adopted islands aswell drew sealers and whalers – abounding of whom formed in both Tasmanian and New Zealand waters . The captive acquaintance differentiated the two colonies. For convict-free New Zealand, freedom in 1854 was a adequately calmly acquired status testinside 640-863. However, for , the year the busline of convicts ended, was fundamental. Even the colony’s name was afflicted – from Van Diemen’s Land – as a way of burying the captive past . Through the after 19th century, the animal cartage went both ways. Tasmanian-born Gabriel Read, who fabricated the aboriginal important gold bang in Otago in 1861, in actuality spent a lot of of his activity on Tasmania, afar from four or so years in Otago.
