I found this subject interesting a little over a year ago when there seemed to be some industry infighting, but the battle is still very much on with Marketing, PR and even some HR departments making claims to own social media.
Maybe since I’m getting to do the work (and I’m not in a true corporate setting) this isn’t as big of a deal to me, but can’t we all get along?
Can’t we all have a piece of the pie?
We all have social media campaigns we could develop, contribute to, and execute. Why not play nice together, collaborate?
My stance on this may change again at some point, but for now, let’s forget about who owns it and focus on doing it big and doing it right!
True. We can sometimes forget about the tech that enables the connections we make via social media. This was felt that day Twitter really went down. People felt truly disconnected.
But on another level, I hear about people really trying to claim social media in these department wars and I think: when will we get past that? For most orgs to be these great transparent beings online, you need everyone to be a part of it in some way.
I'm ready for people to come together, focus on doing it big and doing it right. Wonder if we'll get there...
You still gotta make the infrastructure guys happy, because social media isn't going to survive in a company where it interferes with essential business functions in any way. Our board of directors have put all the social media folks on notice that any hint of any kind of security breach not only will result in slamming the door on all social media, but will result in the termination and possible government prosecution of any of the perpetrators.
Those of us who do classified work for our and other governments take security seriously, and I'm stll not convinced that social media isn't a major security breach waiting to happen.
