For Generation Y there are 5 major factors when purchasing Wine. For the purpose of this post we will list these factors in order of importance, with #1 being more significant than #2. These 5 factors are paramount for any Winery to consider when attempting to sell to Generation Y as they are points of relationship between the both. Lets dig in.

Cost: The most important factor for Generation Y when purchasing Wine is the ” Buck Mark” or essentially $20. Most brands and Vintages popular with Generation Y cost between $2 and $12 a bottle (when purchased at a retail location). Generation Y will look at the relationship between the percieved value and the actual price of the Wine. With few exceptions the price of a good Wine for Generation Y is right at $10-$13.

Label: Beyond only the cost, the Label is what attracts the eye of a Generation Yer more than any other factor. Generation Y will breakdown the weaknesses and strengths of the labels for each Wine they take seriously. What does the Label of your favorite Wine say?

Social: The implications here are simple, does your favorite Wine have any social value? Generation Y looks at the perceived use of any Wine within a group of peers.

Vineyard: Near the bottom of the list is the actual Vineyard that the Wine came from and the relationship Generation Y has to it. Generation Y will commonly looks at the Vineyard as a issue of whether or not it is locally grown and produced. Generation Y does not typically view the Vineyard as the core brand.

Taste: Generation Y is still developing a sophisticated palette for Wine, making its taste of least importance out of all 5 factors. However, there is still importance in its consideration for Generation Y. How does your favorite Wine really taste?

With these 5 factors considered, Generation Y can and regularly does make their purchasing decisions. If you are Gen Y and enjoy Wine, ask yourself, “What is typically more important, Price or Taste?” You might be surprised by the answer.

Somewhat embarrassed to admit you outlined the exact things I look at and the order in which I see them...

Can't go wrong with Trader Joe's "Three Buck Chuck." :)

I'd say the factors of what make me try a wine and what make me continually drink a specific brand are in a slightly different order, however this is pretty spot on.

When trying something for the first time I'll go with the charity or cool cause brand over a regular brand, but if the flavor sucks, I won't buy it again. Price is always at the top of the list for me too.

I actually went to a wine tasting about some family-owned French vineyards where one is actually printing dual labels for one of their wines: the traditional French-country for life-long customers, and an art nouveau one to attract the younger generation.

I'm all about the label and cost, so I'm another piece of proof!

I like the list, though it’s hard to tell if it is purely opinion or backed up by some market data. Aside from that, my initial thought was that the title should be “Generation Y’s CURRENT 5 Wine Factors”. This is because I believe these factors are not definitive but evolving. In time, I predict this list will completely flip as the Gen Y’s palate develops and their bank account’s grow.
