When most people think about career moves, they consider what is immediately available or achievable. However, if the goal is to build a career that is energizing and enjoyable, people should think in terms of what they want, regardless of immediate accessibility.
Instead of building your career path based upon what's available now, why not start with your dream job and work backwards?
With that in mind, who has your dream job and why haven't you emailed them yet?
(note: I initially posted this as a question on Linkedin)

I don't respond to every email sent my way, but I do respond to the good ones.
If someone takes the time to pose a thoughtful question, while also showing that they know more about me than just what's on my homepage, I'll write back 90% of the time. Why wouldn't I?
Today's "wannabe" is tomorrow's Spielberg.
For those sending emails, the worst that can happen is the person on the other end doesn't respond. However, even when that happens, you will have taken time to learn more about the career you want and thus be in a better position.
I think that the point here is perseverance. This is by far the most useful tool for people looking to get ahead in their career. Jake you bring such a HUGE value prop here by emphasizing that if you want something, why not start now. This has been my strategy in my young career thus far and now I am teaching about this at UT this fall (and I'm not too far out of college!). Your post here and your enthusiasm puts you in the ranks of Tim Ferris and Keith Ferrazzi, huge advocates of seeking the answers now rather than later. And I can say through experience, a well crafted email with genuine enthusiasm about learning is a surefire way to get in touch with people in that dream job.
You're awesome! Keep the encouragement coming.
Perseverance is HUGE! And your network helping you out with that perseverance is also key. Whenever I talk about the YPO I'm in, I always bring up the story about how I know for a fact it helped me land my current position (and might I add very, very close to my dream job). Besides my own barrage of thank you letters, emails, phone calls, and web posts, I had my friends and board members who I meet through the YPO sending reference letters, making phone calls, working on my behalf to help me land that job. It was beautiful. Like a perfectly orchestrated play on the field.

PS Jake - was awesome meeting you at the conference. Loved the Trent Edwards conversation on the way to the McAlpin.
Like you said, the worst thing they can do is not respond. And I find a lot of people are willing to help someone they think are passionate, talented, and driven.
Even if you say, "Please email if you ever have any questions," 90% of people won't even do it. The people who do, and ask a good question, are few and far between and generally are "worthy" of the help.
