Tomorrow is a big day for Brazen Careerist. We are launching a new site with new tools and it's a culmination of two years of nonstop thinking about how people should manage their careers. You'll be inundated by information about it tomorrow. Today I want to tell you about how to be an entrepreneur. You have to do stuff you hate doing. Confession: I am SO SICK of writing these Flickr captions. At first I thought it would be fun. I'm a good writer and I love the game of Ryan Paugh finding photos and I have to write a caption on the spot. It was fun for about a week. But we've been doing it for a year.

Sometimes, like on the weeks I was traveling to three cities in five days, Ryan would call me four times in four time zones chasing me down to write captions. I'd say yes then I'd forget. Or I'd say yes and write some insane and therefore useless one, like, here's a caption I wrote for a photo of a bridge: "If I have to do another Flickr caption I'm going to jump off a bridge. "

Part of the joy of having a start up is watching how much you can push yourself. When I agreed to write captions, I thought it would be for a month or two. Not a year. And that's what entrepreneurs say about everything: If you knew how hard it would be at the beginning you'd never do it. This is true of our company, too. I wanted to make a little company to help gen Y bloggers get a bigger voice online, and Ryan Healy and Ryan Paugh were so fun that I wanted to do it with them. The company has turned into something way bigger, driven, largely by you, the community that has been here for over 100 Flickr captions.

So, thank you for putting up with all the stupid captions that Ryan had to run because I was no where to be found to replace them. And thank you for inspiring me to write the great ones. (Here's a link to one of my favorites.) And thank you for pushing us to create the new site that launches tomorrow. Every new feature stems from conversations we had with you : The very early community on Brazen Careerist.

Cheers: To all of us growing something bigger. Together.

I'm looking forward to the launch of the new site with the new tools tomorrow. I enjoyed viewing and reading the Visible Advice ... especially the great ones. I'm surprised (and grateful) it lasted as long as it did because I can appreciate the time and effort involved ... even for the "stupid" ones. I hope you save (backup) this collection and maybe even post an occasional 'visible advice' in the future when you feel like composing one rather than feeling obligated to post one. One of my (recent) favorite pieces of visible advice was 'Look Beyond Where You Can See' at http://www.brazencareerist.com/2009/07/13/look-beyond-where-you-can-see .

Mark,

You have been a great supporter of Visible Advice. Thanks. I like to think you are the only person who noticed when I skipped a day, but I think probably there were a bunch. But you were the one who asked me if I was okay. That's nice. I'm really excited for the launch tomorrow. I hope the new site will attract a lot more people like you: engaged, interesting and fun.

Visible advise was the primary reason I check the site every day. It was fun when they were good and even more fun when they were stupid. Mark wasn't the only one. : )
