Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be on the other side of a firing or layoff? One of the downsides to being a boss is having to let people go, especially when it’s not because they deserve it. Well, now The Washington Post introduces you to “The Five O’Clock Club” - an “outplacement” firm. What, you may ask, is
The reporter's take on the 5occ getting bonuses b/c more people are laid off is incorrect. Also the 5occ actually started as a coaching firm for the employed to get better jobs but only recently moved into outplacement. Full disclosure: I have coached with the 5occ for a few months, and I like their methods, so that's how I know the above facts.
Further, I am not sure why you characterize career coaches who work with the unemployed as vultures, any more than you would characterize any service provider a vulture to someone in need. Is anyone connected to the funeral industry a vulture -- talk about profiting from death, perhaps they just shouldn't charge for their services?
The fact is that jobseekers who get outplacement support find jobs faster than those left to their own devices. Maybe firms provide it to make themselves feel less guilty about te layoff but it doesn't diminish the fact that the laid off are better with the support than without it.
