This past weekend I attended the Austin Breakfast Club, an informal gathering of people between the age of 20 and 40 who go to a place and eat breakfast. When I was trying to explain what I blog about, I started to talk about Millennials. A few people looked at me puzzled. I then explained exactly what a Millennial is, and a person at the table said “oh, I guess I am a Millennial.” Um, YES, you are a Millennial!

This conversation led me to a very informal, yet important, discovery. Millennials don’t even know they are Millennials. They know they are different, they know they prefer team work, they know they advocate for work/life balance, but they don’t even know what they are called!

FACT OR FICTION: Do Millennials even know they are Millennials?

My guess is that the response I receive to this question will be biased. I assume that most people who read my blog and use Twitter know about Millennials. But what about the millions of other Millennials? Do they know they are Millennials and what that means for them?

i've never heard of "milennials", great...another category to bunch people into and assume everything about...

Thanks for your comment. You should check out my blog (blakesunshine.com). I try to write about how all Millennials are different from one another.

I think you are spot on. I think millenials who don't know the term realize their work ethic is different and their needs are different at work. I think it's healthy to have a general category that you are a part of so you can start managing your career to it.

I think that many people don't realize that Millenials are "Generation Y". I personally prefer the term Millenial.

So, you made a blog post about some buzz word "Millenials" and didn't even try to explain the term. FAIL!

@Ryan- Great point. I will make that the topic of my next post. Check out my blog soon for a post on what the word "Millennial" means.

I'll wait for your follow up/explanation as Ryan mentioned, but if you are using the traditional idea wouldn't a Millenial be people who graduated high school in the year 2000 or later. I'm only 29 and I am two years removed from that.

At a breakfast of people 20-40 years old, with only 7 years accounted for perhaps that's why no one knew they were...

@Elisa- Thanks for your comment. The people sitting at my end of the table were all under 25, that's why I was so surprised they didn't know they were Millennials.

Hi Blake,
When I give career advice lectures at colleges/universities, I always ask the students if they are aware that they are called Millennials or that they are members of Generation Y. While a few raise their hands, they are usually in the minority. I always recommend that they check out Brazen Careerist so perhaps they are a little more knowledgeable now than they were before.

I didn't know what I was at all until I picked up Generations and I still can't make if I'm X or Y.

Thanks again for all of your comments. Based on your feedback I wrote the post "What is a Millennial Anyway?"

I would love for all of you to check it out! http://wp.me/p9SY2-79
