Serendipity is alive and well, as long as we all stop filtering what we say for fear people won’t like us.
Stop responding and start TALKING.
It’s understandable to be want to be liked, but isn’t it more important to be yourself? Would you rather have 50 friends who barely know you or ten that would defend you in a second?
Do yourself, me and everyone who knows you a favor and stop worrying about what everyone else thinks. We’re not here to get updates on the world news from you, we don’t care that you can repeat today’s local govt meeting nearly verbatim and we certainly don’t need to know about the latest internet meme.
We want to know what YOU think and feel. So say it.*
Amen!
But what about if you're blogging as a way to manage a professional brand? Shouldn't it be one of your goals to be liked by a lot of people?
Here's what I think...
Do what comes natural. Some people try to hard to develop a voice that's just not them. People can tell when you are being fake. So just be yourself.
Unless you're being borderline offensive the image that you are trying to create for yourself shouldn't suffer.

Hell, I'm borderline offensive and people still listen to what I say. I think it's all about being authentic, honest and transparent. Don't insult.
@Ryan, yes, if you're managing a professional brand, the goal is to be liked by a lot of people, but as you said, that objective doesn't negate authenticity.
Nothing is for everyone and that's the beauty of diversity. Too much filtering and watering down may make the message palatable for more people, but it also dilutes it to the point of unimportance.
If you're blogging to manage a brand, I think the most important thing is for the blogger's personality to match that of the brand.
I agree with Leandra, there is a way to balance blogging for a brand and being authentic. The people in the public spotlight that we like most are the ones that we believe are being true to themselves (take celebrities).
There is always the choice to be diplomatic. Swearing up and down won't help your public image (perhaps for shock value it might). I think when we write or do anything for that matter, we can be authentic, and elegant

My answer in this quote :
"Always remember that you are unique; just like everyone else."
To be meditated.

Very true and well-said. Something I still struggle with. But your comments remind me of the quote by Dr. Seuss, "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
A gray area on the 'net, but still a good point.
