Odds are, if you’re reading this, you’ve probably checked your email a few times today. And I have a couple of questions for you:
Take a second to think about your answers. If you say “I don’t know,” keep reading. If you have a good reason, keep reading.
As soon as I read the title of this post, I knew it was aimed at me. I am one of those email-obsessed you mention--in fact, my Gmail is open as I type this. But you do make some good points. When there is no specific goal, email--or checking email, rather--serves mostly as a neverending distraction. Now, with smartphones, BlackBerrys and iPhones, it's only more so with "email on the go."
Great post. I don't know how many times I've been sucked into the abyss they call email, and it really is a distraction because you never get to the things you wanted to do anyway.
I shut it off when I'm working on a project. If someone wants something they can come to the office, or call me rather than sending me an email.
I think a digital free weekend is a good idea once in a while, especially as Meenal pointed out, with the advent of smart phones. Once in a while, we need to shut off our brains!

Great post. I have to think about the distinction between email and message.

Great post Charles! It is like anything in life, there must be moderation and discipline or you will never achieve your goals. A side note: Does anybody else see the irony of the Email check box below?
