There are so many people out there who think Gen-Y is the best thing since sliced bread. I am a Gen-Y’er and I believe it most days, but today I am here to say that Gen Y is the most irresponsible generation. Bold, I know. At my session of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Signature Course, there were three things that stood out to me as issues wh

So...Where are we irresponsible exactly?

1. We are awesome at getting out of trouble. Sweet. I hate getting in trouble.

2. What we enjoy, also happens to be what we do. Should I quit my job because I enjoy it? and regarding the passion; at least we have it. Our parents didn't always have the option to have passion for their careers.

3. This statement has more to do with mutual respect and not name calling at the jungle gym than it has to do with how we interact and enforce policy in our professional careers.

....So maybe I'm being a little harsh, but I doubt a book (or session regarding a book) can clearly state that an entire generation is irresponsible. I want more evidence (or in your case, opinion)

Interesting Post, I do agree with some:
1.This is part of human nature to survive with least resistance. It's just cross generational.

2. I like the reminder that passion & enjoyment is 2 different thing, it might overlap; but many times it just doesn't. Example: I like programming & I love video games ... Does that mean my passion must be making video games .... No!

3. You are right, but this might be evolving issue; Look at the evolving changes in Race & Gender issue in the workplace for last 50 years. Many of the previous generations might not as empathic as many Gen Ys. Maybe the next gen can change that.

@Liza, you are taking this way too personally.
There are great things about Gen Y, but there are also flaws.

This is not what I thought this post was going to be about! I think your strongest point is the last: this is something I must often remind myself. That also plays into the increase in sensativity toward different working styles - for me to effectively manage someone, I need to know what they need from me just as much as they need to know what my expectations are.
