I have the best co-worker in the world. He is smart, kind, understanding, yet he knows how to teach and criticize when need be. He is personable, and I trust him with my life. These type of co-workers are far and few, so when you come across one, know that you are lucky, and hold onto them tightly.
Take every moment to learn from them, and with them. Ask them for advice and critiques, because isn't it better to be put down by a friend, rather than your boss?
Get to know them on a personal level, because you will have the understanding of why they might be having an off day. You can work better too if you know that you can trust them. I trust him, and I know he trusts me, and that's why we work well together.
A good co-worker will reel you in if your thoughts are out of this world. A good co-worker will allow you both to balance out each others weaknesses. And, a good co-worker and friend will stay up till midnight chopping up vegetables and fruit for an event that you do not even want to be at.
I am told by others that I am lucky. That not a lot of people who work together get along. That I should hold on tight to that person, and value the relationship. I know that I am lucky and I just think that anyone who has someone like this, or wishes for it, to cherish and hold on tight, because these types of come once in a lifetime.
Anyone know someone like this? Or has a coworker who is amazing? Great feeling, huh?
Great advice!
But don't hold on too tight. I've moved from jobs where I loved my coworkers to jobs where I loathed my coworkers, then back again. Even though I lost some great peers and had to deal with some of the more sour coworkers in the world, I wouldn't let it stop me from focusing on my own career, moving forward and growing.
Long story short, enjoy them while you have them! But always be on the lookout for bigger and better things.
This is a great post. A few years ago I had a co-worker that was one of my best friends, and would have done anything for me. I appreciated it, but I also understood that there would be a time to move on. When I did move on I made sure to stay in touch. I still talk to him everyday, and though he is not working with me, he is still the person I go to when I need something.
