At Work

One thing I know right now about the world of work is this: it’s stressful.

No matter who you are or what you’re doing, I’m sure you can relate. There are certainly signs of hope in the economy, but reality is, not one of us is standing on completely solid ground.

And it’s hard in

I think Dee Hock, the founder of VISA International, would agree with you.
A quote from him - "“Hire and promote first on the basis of integrity; second, motivation; third, capacity; fourth, understanding; fifth, knowledge; and last and least, experience. Without integrity, motivation is dangerous; without motivation, capacity is impotent; without capacity, understanding is limited; without understanding, knowledge is meaningless; without knowledge, experience is blind. Experience is easy to provide and quickly put to good use by people with all the other qualities.”
This quote was taken from an excellent article on him at Good2Work - http://www.good2work.com/article/90 . Also included in this article are his thoughts on the leader-follower relationship. Really good stuff from a "self-educated mountain boy with a deeply ingrained respect for the individual and a hard-won sense of self-worth."

@ Mark - Thanks for sharing that great quote!

To me, it's so easy to get wrapped up in all these other attributes and concepts that we forget that having the right foundation helps the rest fall into place.

Well written! I have been a proud employee of Sun Microsytems for about 5 years and one of the reasons is purely for their vision. "Courage, Integrity, Innovation and Pace" We see this every time we log into our systems and it makes me feel like a real contributor. Working for a company which shares similar values is really invaluable. And makes it easier to drink the "kool-aid!"

@ Shelley - Thanks for sharing! I think it's so important right now to find out how your values tie in to those of your employer, and it's great to hear the impact of that in action!

Shelley,

How does it feel now to be aquired by a company who has become known for its questionable accounting, sales and support practices? Just curious on your thoughts of Sun's aquisition by Oracle.

Great topic.
Have you read the new best selling book out there called "Integrity is Everything" by John Lavenia? He's a phenomenal colleague of mine from New York, living in L.A.

Enjoy!
