One thing that’s always bugged me about reality TV is how people are able to leave their jobs for a month or six weeks or however long the show takes to tape. Sure, maybe some of them have lots of accumulated unused vacation time or are self-employed or something, but that is part of the reason reality TV is so chock full

The last time I remember hearing this issue come up was in the original run of The Mole, in which one contestant had a job that was guaranteed up to a certain point--and she got eliminated the day after that deadline.
I wonder this, too. Mr. Nonymous and I watch The Amazing Race and talk about how we would divide up tasks, but ultimately I would have to quit my job--unless they would let me take time unpaid, and who knows?--so it's really unlikely that we'd ever try.
It is interesting how these people get to take time off or even try to keep their jobs knowing that its truly a fine line between getting what they want and keeping your job. I don't blame his boss and it sounds as if he didn't explain the situation to his boss properly either. He probably sugarcoated it just to get away. I don't even know how, as an employer, I would react to an employee who just has to be on a reality tv show. Great post!
