During the past couple of years Facebook has gone through a lot of changes. Change is good right? While I give it up to Facebook for making some significant changes, some I could have gone without.

While in college I deleted my Facebook profile and joined back up last summer to stay connected with everyone I met during my internship in Los Angeles.  Being able to stay in touch with out-of-state friends is actually my main reason for staying on Facebook.

Here are my reasons why I don’t heart Facebook:

  1. Information overload. As soon as I log in I am bombarded with too much information. My eyes are all over the place.
  2. Irrelevant ads.  I am tired of seeing “Mom Builds Her Company” and thumbs down doesn’t seem to help.
  3. Bold changes. Making major changes to the terms of use and expecting the users to deal with it… is a definitive no no.
  4. Leaving out Facebook community.  If you claim to listen to your Facebook users, please do!
  5. It’s just not simple. I like simple, that’s why I like twitter.

I still have a Facebook. I am not pulling the plug. But I will continue to visit Facebook once a week, or every couple of weeks as opposed to going on twitter a couple of times a day.

Why do you like or don’t like Facebook?

I agree with what you're saying here, Jenny.

Facebook can be information overload for sure. the minute you sign in, too many people have advertised their lives for you to see.

But that's the good thing about having the option for signing out. I also use it to keep in touch with friends who are out of province/country. As for microknowledge, no thanks!

I have seen reports that for the first time Facebook usage among 18-25 year olds is actually down, and I think this is because Facebook does not fulfill its stated mission: to connect people in a deeper way. Instead through opening itself to the entire world, it has moved from a collegiate community building tool and into a mass market goliath. The internet has made such mass market approaches obsolete because technology allows individuals to group in small, engaged niche markets. I believe that the future will lie in such niche social networking groups that will allow us to connect on a meaningful level (a good example of this trend is the success of sites like Brazen Careerist). Facebook will always have a place in the internet age, but I think more as an online Yellowpages rather than the community building tool it claims to be.

Mehnaz, thanks to my out-of-state friends I am hanging by a string to Facebook.

Brett, The biggest mistake similar sites make is trying to focus on being everything to everyone. While some things appeal to me, most of it I could do without. Sites like Brazen Careerist have identified their main function and are focused on fulfilling that. I agree that Facebook will no longer be the community building tool. They have made it easier to maintain relationships rather than building new ones.

I agree, Facebook can be extremely overwhelming and kinda makes me want to throw my computer out the window. Especially as I see more and more of the stupid lists, surveys and applications I cancelled my myspace account to avoid. That being said, looking over my blog analytics, my highest referring site is Facebook. I update my new posts (just once!) and close friends have even posted a link to my blog suggesting others check it out.

I think that the relational/community feeling of Facebook is SO worth it, unfortunately the rest of the junk distracts (sometimes) a little too much!

Three things I love most about facebook:
- Being able to contact any of my friends really easily.
- Sharing photos.
- Playing the games applications with my mates. (I'm addicted to Mafia Wars!)

It's interesting while many of the things you say are very true and I am also not a fan of aspects of the ToS and the info overload but the more I use twitter the more I am starting to really like facebook.
