I love polling. Sometimes you take it for what it’s worth… and sometimes it blows you away. I stumbled across a post by ReadWriteWeb about a polling completed on LinkedIN asking their members What is the most important new platform for brands to master?
and the results?

What does this mean for marketing and social media?
Business owners are starting to take notice of the growing trend in the social media world and the ability for businesses to use networks to drive revenue. The influence of the social Internet age is growing exponentially.
My question to all the business owners and marketing directors is this… What are you going to do with this information? Is it time to take the dive and joining the Twitter or Facebook community?
Is your brand going to be hurt if you do not join the masses?

Twitter isn't necessarily more important for business, it's just more interesting right now. I believe that you need to be a part of all of these networks. They're all still evolving, and there will be uses for them in the future that no-one has thought of yet.
So I don't think you're going to hurt your brand by not joining the social media revolution. Not yet anyway. But you certainly aren't helping it any.
The key is to early adopt, so that when these tools do become indispensable, you'll already have a strong foothold.
As for how we use them, we recently held an Extreme Website Makeover event and promoted it exclusively through social medial. You can read more about that here: http://www.metropoliscreative.com/2009/05/extreme-marketing-through-soci...

I think this is very interesting. I agree with Michael that Twitter received the highest ranking because of the recent media and social chatter about it.
But I think a bigger question to ask is, "Why isn't LinkIn higher on the pole?" LinkIn was created specifically for business, yet it isn't at the top of the list, why?
I think its because LinkedIn requires 1. payment for full access 2. permission to actually connect with people, 3. Is more popular among already well-established businesses.
Twitter and Facebook don't require a fee, and you can virtually connect and communicate with anyone at any time. The communication aspect is what makes these two not only the favorite, but the easiest, most accessible and well-liked social tools on the web (without the clutter of Myspace of course).
The power of social networking lies in its ability to spread your business through word of mouth. This type of marketing is real, and honest. It understands that people are your greatest asset when trying to advertise something. The trick is being remarkable enough so that people will talk about you.

Travis (my dog friend wearing the shirt) is absolutely correct. Twitter is a place where authenticity is king/queen and the fakes selling snake oil get weeded out fairly quickly. I've been involved in numerous business transactions...have helped people find jobs and have seen all kinds of wonderful connections happen.
LinkedIn is a good business tool but is lacking in "soul" and excitement of twitter. I use a combo of FB, Twtr & LI...and I'm having a ball!

Stop using your companies pre-printed thank you notes. Hand write a thank you note! Hand writing is much more personal and it shows you care. More...
