Given the state of our economy, there’s a good chance some of you may face a job layoff in the near future. No matter how it’s handled, a layoff is scary, emotional and frustrating. You may wonder what you did wrong, but don’t give it a second thought: the difference between a layof

I think the main thing is to take this opportunity to leave the rat race and follow your own path. Escaping the path of following the herd to mediocrity is best accomplished at a young age. I was 28 before I was finally able to break free from wage slavery and regret I didn't do it sooner. It took a lay-off for me to realize I had better potential on my own and not spending my time advancing someone else's goals and net worth.

Take time to reflect and make the best decision. A part time job may be able to support you making a better long term decision in leaving the cubicle permanently.

Another thing to be aware of is the COBRA insurance stimulus package. The laid off employee only pays 35% of the cost depending on the date they got laid off. The other 65% of the COBRA premium will be reimbursed by means of a payroll tax credit to the employer.

Really great advice, Kirsty. As someone who has been going thru the lay off it's very emotional and difficult. But remaining positive - especially when talking and interviewing is really, really important. Contacting your friends and family can really help too because majority of jobs are thru referrals. Also make sure you Google your name and see what Employers will find about you. Because they will. Those are some other things I can add.

If you're considering COBRA or have questions about it, check out the COBRA Information Center @ http://qvisory.org/cobra. Also, I agree with Brad. Find a part-time job and then spend your extra time following your own path.
