When performance reviews arrive and your manager asks you if you are doing good, never tell him you are not. He is not interested in your well being, well, maybe he is. But even if he is, he can’t do anything about that because he is not THE

"...you consistently avoid his (boss's) phone calls."
What workplace can you do that at and still stay employed??? Boss's phone calls being consistently missed is a pretty good sign you are not doing well.
But, yes, when they ask you "how are you doing?", they really mean "what have you done for the company?".

Let me help: What I think you mean to say is that your boss is only popular because he is coddled by his underlings as a result of their own fear?
If this is what you meant, then you are correct.
Here’s an alternative: Work for yourself. Become a freelancer or “consultant” in your industry. Find out what it feels like for people to hire you for your skills, not your pulse. Make above-market rates and have your time valued (being paid by the hour or day has that affect on bosses).
The issue to address here is your response to the status quo; not the status quo itself.
