My wife and I bought our first house last week. Apartment living is great, and the flexibility and lack of responsibility it provides has its perks, but with a 30-Year Fixed and an interest rate under 5%, we decided that it was time to move.

Congratulations! You should get a fat tax credit to go with it. You'll also pick up the art of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) very quickly and HGTV will be your new favorite network.

Andre has a good point about DIY. And in case you can't DIY, be sure to keep a cushion of cash in your savings to cover repairs to the house. Hopefully they will be few!

Thanks! We'll be getting a nice tax credit, which certainly helps. My dad is an electrician, so I know the difference between a Flathead and a Phillips screwdriver, but I have much to learn. We do have an emergency fund just in case. Something is bound to need repair that I won't be able to fix.

One of the big selling points on this house was it's condition. The previous owners put a lot of money into the house (e.g. new roof, furnace, water heater etc.) in the last few years. For being 23 years old, the house is in great condition.

Why did I just read an article about a dude buying a house? At what point did we move from informative to entertaining... to now, banal?

Here's a guide: Begin everything you do each day with the self-knowledge and honesty that comes with believing that nobody owes you anything. Then, next time you write a blog post you'll feel the need to EARN the reader's attention by selecting an interesting topic and wording it in a more interesting fashion than if you are writing in your own diary.

Perfect timing, congrats!!!!!!!!

@Anonymous: I actually learn a ton more from people's personal stories than from the token informative blog post. But to each is own I guess.

Great post Jason. Congrats!
