The other night I was driving a friend back to his place, and my car was running low on gas. Since we both live around the same area, we started talking about the cheapest place to get gas. It turns out we both agreed that Chevron has the cheapest gas in our area.
However, I didn’t realize that there are two Chevron stations literally within a block of each other, and one is cheaper than the other. As luck would have it, I’ve been going to the more expensive one, because that’s the only one I drive past on a regular basis. On the other hand, my friend drives past both of them on his way to and from work everyday, so he knew about the cheaper one.
On the bright side, the difference in price was only 5 cents per gallon, so even after filling up an entire tank for my car, I’d only be saving around 60 cents. That’s not even enough money to buy the really cheap nachos that Taco Bell has been promoting lately.
Having the conversation with my friend reminded me of being back home with my parents. If there’s one topic that always comes up when I go back to visit, it’s the price of gas. My parents are definitely willing to drive a few miles out of the way just to get the lowest price on gas. It’s also amusing when my mom gets disappointed after finding out that I filled up at an “expensive” gas station.
While I generally do try to find the lowest gas prices, I’ve never driven out of my way just to save a few nickels and dimes on gas. Unless there’s a huge disparity among gas prices in your area, you most likely won’t save that much money. Someone has even done the math.
What type of person are you? Do you drive around to find the cheapest gas or do you just fill up at the most convenient location?

I keep an eye on the trends for the gas stations on my way home from work (or on my way anywhere I go on a regular basis) and make a habit of going to the ones that trend on the lower end. No, I won't drive an extra 5 miles to save 8 cents to a gallon, but that doesn't mean I won't pay attention to the prices when I do fill up.
As part of the loyalty card program at our supermarket, we get 10-cents off gas at the supermarket gas station, for every $100 we spend. We do have to go a few miles out of our way to get the gas station (there isn't one at the supermarket closest to our house) but it's worth it.
In December we had accumulated so many discounts that we were able to buy gas for 35.9 cents per gallon. 19 gallons cost us $6.86.
Otherwise, I don't bother looking for cheaper gas.
