In my search for all that is interesting involving PR, Marketing and Social Media, one company keeps appearing in my inbox, wall or twitterfeed: LEGO.
I’ve blogged about my connection to Lego in the past, but aside from Apple, who definitely knows how to get my attention, I can’t think of many companies that have been able to regularly make me say “that’s cool.” To some of you reading, it may not sound like an amazing accomplishment for a customer’s reaction to a brand to be “that’s cool,” but I think it is, considering the options: “That’s stupid,” “That’s a waste,” “Someone got paid to come up with that idea,” or, among the worst in my opinion, SILENCE - being so irrelevant that your efforts don’t even get noticed.
Here are just some of the ways that Lego has migrated onto and setup shop on my cool list:
1. Creating an anniversary celebration like this:
2. Inspiring someone to recreate art like this using your product:

3. Being the focus of a section in the master guide that is Groundswell:

4. Having so much online content that you could have an Alltop page:

5. Using your product as your business card…literally:

Not every company is going to be able to do these types of things - different products, industry, goals, mission, etc. - BUT, every company can be involved in something this noticeable, this innovative, this different, this cool.
What other companies would you put in the “Lego Cool” category? Has your company done anything cool lately?
Here at HintCafe, we just added a feature called Secure Phone Call where two singles can talk to each other on phone without sharing their phone number. HintCafe automated phone systems connect the two singles via phone at a scheduled time agreed upon between them.
We think this feature is really cool. Though, I would admit that the uptake of the feature has been lower than expected. I guess as start up, the best way to make a good product is to experiment.
I love the business cards!! I'm stealing that idea LOL. My company just had some scuba divers dangling from a building to promote the opening of our new properties in Japan

The article mentions Adidas did something similar a few years back
@Ryan I wonder if its how it's being positioned. You know? Does this seem like a natural option? Email at james.walker@prprescriptions.com if you want to talk about this more.
@Kiersten Mitchell I want those business cards as well! Not sure if this exists yet, but LEGO (if you're reading), you should have a site where I can submit a pic and you send me a figure that looks like me, clothes and all. Just a thought...
Also, on the hotel, that's pretty cool. Things like that and the USA Today Hotel Blog (http://blogs.usatoday.com/hotelhotsheet/) make me want to do a Gen Y Hotel post - profiling a few hotels with interesting elements that add to the experience.
@JRandom42 Unless it's confidential, you should just go ahead and put it out there. Never know who might be interested.
James,
Not only is most of it confidential, but it's classified with the Defense Department, as in I-could-tell-you-but-I'd-have-to-make-you-disappear-afterwards type of classification.
Some of it is related to the ERP system that's now in place, but let's face it, not too many people are that interested in such things.
