Social Media is a blast. If you’re a social butterfly, which many of us are, you will find social media to be fun and a challenge, almost a game. I have happily played in the pool of social media for about 18 months now and have been making my living consulting in social media marketing for about six months. The applications to my two fortes, recruiting/HR and marketing are endless, allowing me to weave this incredibly fun, incredibly easy way of communicating into my trie

Cool post Maren - It's funny how everyone around me is all of a sudden a Social Media consultant, helping people get on Twitter, throw up a Facebook page and shoot some videos on their Flip. In fact, this was me a few months ago. Then I needed to show and prove - so we have expanded, built relationships and connected with people that ca make a difference in a campaign (still hate calling it that). The fact of the matter is that it is getting really easy to throw up a blog, a contact form and some prices and call yourself a guru, social media expert, etc - it is harder to show results, conversions and effectiveness in customer acquisition and retention.

I think you have a cool angle though, with HR + Social Media. HR needs a makeover - hope you can help them out!

You make some great points here. I especially like #4 - I think in any domain guru's don't need to call themselves a guru or an expert, people just know that they are. Plus in social media the cliche - "the more you know the more you realize you don't know" can ring very true.

I would add a #5 to your mix - Know when enough is enough - don't sign up for every new social media/social networking site that pops up. Ultimately the goal of social media is to go where your people are so if there is a niche specific social network that becomes popular than I'd recommend checking it out but you don't need to try ALLLLLLL of them.

Social Media Consultants today are the Web Marketing gurus of 1995 or the Y2K Consultants of 1999. Undefined and overhyped.
