Following up with people is a lost art, and we need to do more of it. I have been on the job hunt for the past five months, luckily, my freelance writing gigs have kept me earning monthly income while I look for a day job. I have found that when you follow up with hiring managers, they respond favorably to you. Here are some examples of ways to follow up with people in your personal and professional career.

Great advice Erik! I always thank my potential employers for an interview; however I do it by email. It's more instantaneous. If you write a hand written note, and I am assuming you would snail mail it to the hiring manager, it would take a day or two for it to get to them, by then it might lose its impact.
However, I whole heartedly agree with you regarding writing thank you notes for gifts and to friends. It shows them that you sincerely appreciate their generosity. It's also a classy thing to do, in my opinion.
Call me old fashion but a hand written love note is also a nice touch to keep the romance alive. But I digress.
Great points Erik. The art of following up is also very powerful when dealing with business development and with current clients or candidates. A sincere thank you letter to a client for the opportunity to work with them or a kind-hearted note to a candidate for being a pleasure to work with will go a long way in establishing a successful and beneficial relationship with that individual.

Great article, Erik!
