During the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, one of my best friends had a massive birthday party here in the city. The DJ was great, old friends who were in New York for the holidays were in attendance for the festivities; it was proof that my friends and I haven’t grown up too much. Despite our jobs, despite the newfound professional demeanors, we still know how to have a good time. However, given that we weren’t particularly (ahem) “cohesive” at the end

I definitely have a rough time going out and not drinking and being social. I find it hard to be out and not have something in my hand, so I usually just buy one and nurse it for a while.

A few other things Iv learned since college:
1. I can not drink Beast Light, Natty, or anything absurdly cheap, although, coors light is still amazing.
2. My tolerance is still pretty good, although, what kills me the most is the no sleep when I am out all night and then go to work on 4 hours of sleep with a pulsating headache.
3. People who get sloppy drunk are not fun to be around, so I do not get like that anymore. Not attractive either.
4. I can not afford going out all the time and partying like a college kid, too many other priorities now, its called growing up.
5. 50 cent mixed drink night means the liquor is worth 50 cents!

Great post miss, first time reading your work and I enjoyed it obv!

Great post!  This is an issue that people need to take seriously when leaving school.  It IS a big problem if your college drinking habits continue into the real world.  When I was in school (not too long ago) I was normally the guy who offered to get drinks with people, and many situations proved to be excellent times to get wasted; a warm day, a football game, any fraternity event, bowling, finishing an exam, etc etc.  The list could go on forever.

Not the case anymore, now I will go out once a weekend and maybe grab a drink or two after work, but I stay under control as much as possible, I no longer go out with my fraternity brothers and roomates that are all about buying the next shot, and drinking until the sun comes up...  It is a tough transition, but one that you need to take control of as soon as you get that degree!

Not to mention that once you leave college, you usually have to actually pay for drinks, or at least pay more!

This goes into the category of "well duh" for most of us over 30, but it is important to think about! Maybe you can be the one to say "go have a coffe" instead of the bar for a change. Maybe others in your group will be appreciative, especially in that morning meeting the next day!

I know only 1 or 2 people who have managed to keep their college alcohol tolerance into their 30's and for the most part its not a pretty sight. These same people tend to be the initatiors of the lets go have a drink, and often are critical and teasing of those who choose coke over alcohol. Let them be man!

:-/ My friends laugh at me when I go out with them and I say to the bartender, "My I have a glass of apple juice". I never drank ever before.

:)

Perhaps, if you don't wish to drink out in a social setting ask for some apple juice-- like me LOL :). I don't think anyone really cares after a certain age.

I enjoyed reading this post :) I look forward to more.

This is a great topic for a post! One danger at bigger companies is that young graduates are exposed to the wonders of free bars, office Christmas parties, and the like and they go mad. Everyone knows and expects that young people will make the most of a free bar (after all, what's a free bar for but to encourage people to get drunk?), but there's a fine line in terms of how you behave. Managers expect you to be fit, healthy and on-time the next morning, no matter how drunk you were the night before or how late you stayed out. It can sometimes take one or two mis-steps before someone realises this :o)

I'm in my late 20s and I believe (and friends say the same) that drink hits you harder as you get older.. It gets tougher to stay out late and then be up at 7am for work (though, are many people ever up at 7am when they're in college? :o))

One "trick" I do nowadays is drinking bottles instead of pints, as there's less in them and it's easier to linger over a bottle than the "peer pressure" of a pint of beer, where people can see if you're drinking slowly or not at all..

I've definitely learnt to just take my time over a drink and not feel rushed by those around me.. Let other people get drunk, just focus on enjoying talking with people and having a good night out, with as little alcohol as possible! :o)
