One year ago today I was in Florence with my girlfriend. In fact, if you’re reading this and it’s the afternoon, we were probably walking by the place Galileo lived.

Fast forward to now: Today I’ll be spending the afternoon in my cube reviewing 2009 marketing initiatives. That’s how much my life has changed in one short year.

I spent last January and February in Read this author's blog.

Good call Andy. As every new year approaches people start blogging a laundry list of goals they have for the new year, and you know that most of those goals (if not all) are not going last.

It's much better to suceed at a few things you're focused on than try to juggle a ton of new responsibilities and fail miserably.

Andy,

Thank you! This has been in my head for some time now, and I have been meaning to write about this as well.

I think "new years resolutions" fade fast. The new year brings an opportunity to redefine your direction. A time to assess where you are, where you want to go, who you want to be and the steps you need to take to get there. But, these assessments should boil down to just few goals or a theme. Big ideas and overarching goals are good, but you should focus on few actionable objectives for the new year. At least that's what I'm doing :)

@Ryan - Ironically, one goal I see on almost every blog is to "blog more often."

@Carla - New Year's Resolutions are like diets... they're temporary. It takes a lifestyle change to make a significant impact. Care to share what are you focusing on in 2009? :)

I'm focusing on three things:

Running, People, Passion.

Running:I love running, and in '08 I ran my first 10K (which I was stoked!). I am fairly consistent, but I want to truly make it a lifestyle (friends to run with, doing more races) this year.
People: Opening up and getting closer to people from various areas of my life.
Passion: More work-oriented, but finishing my degree and finding a job, city and lifestyle I am passionate about.

More themes/overlying goals/lifestyle adaptations :)

I like this idea - it's a bit more like stepping back and saying, "Who will I be in a year?" rather than getting tripped up by the little things along the way.

I agree whole-heartedly.However, I did write a list of goals with dates and metrics. I seperated my goals into "planned" and "unplanned". My top 3 goals have been planned in detail. After I achieve one of the 3 goals I will just move another goal into the planned group.
