Looking within yourself is an essential part of self awareness, but without the ability to see yourself as others do, you won’t be able to manage what you communicate about yourself to others. The ability to connect what’s going on inside of you to how you appear on the outside is essential for communicating the right things about yourself, rather than leaving it up to the interpretation of others. The following steps will allow you to see yourself as others do.
I think you made a few great points here, Amanda.
Self-awareness is key, but you bridge that to an equally important point. We can be as self-aware of our own thoughts/feelings/emotions as we want, but people won't necessarily perceive them that way. We need to make sure we're aware of how people perceive us, because regardless of what the reality might be, people's perception will trump it. Making sure that the picture we're presenting will accurately communicate what we're thinking/feeling in a way that others will perceive correctly is a key component of leadership and communication.
Great post!

Adam - Thanks for the comment. It's true, the perception of others trumps our perception of ourselves. It's crucial to communicate what we want to communicate about ourselves. Otherwise, it's up to everyone else!
I remember a comment I read on Steve Pavlina's blog at some point in the past. This may not be verbatim, but it was along the lines of:
"You can give up control, but not responsibility."
I usually try to remember that when communicating and not seeming to get through. It's not necessarily the other person's fault for not understanding what I'm saying, it's my fault for not putting it in a form that they can understand.
