In any workplace there are always several individuals looking to leave. In a normal economy these people may quit before they line up their next job. In a recession, they’re likely to stay where they are preferring a paycheck to unemployment. If you’re one of these people the workplace can start to feel like a prisoner of war camp. If you’re “out” about your unhappiness you’ll find several others characters in your camp.

The Tag-a-Long: This individual gloms onto your talk of a better life. They commiserate with you about the hardships you go through. They beg you to take them with you. But, if you weren’t there to support them they wouldn’t leave. They want you to dig the tunnel and once they know it’s safe they’ll follow.

The Talker: This is the person that always talks about leaving. They talk about it. They might even tell you about chances they’ve had to escape and how it didn’t work out for one reason or another. You know that they have no real plans to leave but they’ve somehow convinced themselves that it’s just around the corner. They wouldn’t leave if you dug the tunnel for them.

The Crazy One: This individual has not reached acceptance of his/her current position. They plot daily how they’re going leave in a blaze of glory. They become erratic and paranoid, thus becoming untrustworthy themselves. They’ll help you dig your tunnel but will stockpile ammunition behind your back.

Knowing it’s time to leave a position can be more stressful than just being unhappy with your job. The wait, the careful interactions, the characters around you…it all makes for a difficult situation. Just keep digging.

Writer’s note: The comparison of an unhappy work situation to a POW camp is not meant to be taken seriously.
