As we approach the Christmas season, we approach that traditional time of the year where work slows. We also approach that time of the year when people traditionally set goals. January 1st. That’s the traditional time to set goals. Many people think it’s the only time. “I’ll start going to the gym in the New Year”. “I’ll quit smoking on January 1st”. If you’re going to do it on January 1st, why not do it today? Right now.
“What? RIGHT NOW?! Are you crazy?!”, they say.
It’s funny how we believe goals only work when set in the New Year. Or worrying. But I’ll stick with funny for now.
I think I’ll set my goals on 31st December so I’m a day ahead of everybody else. Or I could do it now so I’m two weeks ahead. Anyway…
Or it could be broken full of “I’ll be back after Xmas” material. A crazy a posting schedule. And a hap-hazard feel.
Whether you make or break your blog could all depend on how you manage the next 30 days.
The graph above comes from Technorati’s 2007 State of the Blogosphere. In it, we see how the number of blogs created dramatically decreases in December and January. Coincidently, we also see that the number of splogs (spam blogs) increase dramatically in December.
So while the blogosphere is slowing down and your readers feeds are being inundated with spam, how are you going to react? Are you going to slow too, just like the rest of the blogosphere? Or are you going to schedule posts for the holiday season to keep up momentum and be one of the few blogs in your readers feeds that maintains its schedule and quality?
Because I’ll tell you one thing… the pro bloggers won’t slow down their posting frequency and quality over the holiday period. But the amateurs will.
Will you schedule posts in advance to help you stand head and shoulders above the rest? Will you take advantage of all those new goal setters and go getters in the new year as they look for new blogs to read? What will your blog be like over the Xmas season? Let us know in the comments!

Have you thought about maybe correlating this to blog traffic or feed reading stats over the holidays? The catch-22 to your advice is that many readers (I imagine and kinda hope) don't check their feeds as much over the holidays. If you post during the holidays, your content swept away in a frustrated "mark all as read" in January. I wonder which one is riskier?

*your content could be swept away
I've never really had aspirations regarding my blog, but I'm sure this will have some people frantically checking their feeds, and wondering what to do on their blogs over the next couple of weeks.
My posting, theoretically, during the holiday should be more frequent and of better quality as I'm on term break, and have more time. My readers, however, will probably be around less so it doesn't really make sense to me to overdue it.
For those with pro-blogger aspirations the question you pose is a valid one, and one I'd consider were I in that category.
