I don’t know about you but it’s usually about now that all my budgets for present buying go out the window. All the time spent sitting with my little calculator and working out modest but creative, thoughtful gifts goes out the window and things become BIGGER, BETTER, (stronger, faster, harder..).
Essentially, I feel like my brain is taken over by a mid-western American and I’m unable to control myself, I just want to spend, spend, spend.
But this year, I can’t do it. I have to be smart: must.save.money.for.tuition.
Normally most working folks aren’t saving up for tuition like me, but instead maybe for this year, just trying to saving for a little extra-added security (job security, life security, take your pick.) Either way, when it comes to giving, gift ideas need a little more thought and little less use of the plastic devil (Visa, why do you trap me so?)
Thankfully, Idealist’s blog points to the Give List, a site that currently has 71 ways to give without going for the wallet.
Idealist also jumps in on the fray for gift giving season and offers up a number of non-ka-ching, ka-ching gift-giving ideas, whether you’re part of an organization or you’re an individual.
Organizations can hold an Open House to give away old office furniture and invite non-profits in the area to come and see what their office could use
Individuals can donate time to an organization they care about or if you feel you have no time to spare, simply write a thank you note for all the hard-work the people at the org do.
Though a thank you card is a dying art (and something I still feel guilty about for not doing for my bat mitzvah gifts ..oh the shame!), it really is a nice gesture to some over-worked, over-tired, under-paid non-prof worker who wasn’t expecting a random stranger to notice their efforts.
So once again, here’s The Give List and Idealist’s ideas for a giving-frenzy free of interest in 30 days.
May you have more constraint than I ...
