Tara, what a small world! I didn't realize you were on BC. Congratulations on the feature.

It's good to be critical of yourself. If you are always happy or satisfied, then you will never push yourself to improve. As long as you are eternally optimistic, a little self criticism will help you get to where you want to be.

Allie,

Thanks so much for the words of congratulations. I have a feeling we will be bumping into each other a lot. I look forward to it.

All the best,

Tara

Ryan,

I agree that a certain amount of self-criticism is healthy but I do feel that at a certain point, it can be crippling. I'm just trying to prevent myself from getting to that point! I need to continue to find a balance of self-confidence and self-criticism. It is a thin line, at least for me.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts,

Tara

Ok, when I first read this I thought of a really interesting piece I read in another magazine a few months ago by a woman who talked about her lifelong quest to silence her inner critic. Her technique - not kidding - was that she named the inner critic- she named it Stan. It probably sounds crazy, it sounded crazy to me when I read the article, but she interviewed a psychologist for the article as well, who said that this was actually a good thing, because it made it easier for her to "tell off" the inner critic. I wish I could remember where I read it so I could link to it! If I find it later I'll post the link here...

Nisha,

That's a great idea. I'm going to give it whirl. Now I just need to settle on a name...

I'd love to read the article if you find it.

Hi Tara -

I'm putting together a workshop on the "inner critic," and ran across your blog while looking for info about popular approaches to this universal issue. I wanted to let you know about this method that I teach called Focusing. The Focusing approach to parts of the self that are speaking in critical voices is different ... we approach the inner world by taking a step back and giving a gentle "hello" to whatever appears, including angry, critical parts. Then, rather than telling the part what it should be doing instead of criticizing us, we allow it to talk from its point of view ... my role then becomes the listener ... I hear what this part has to say without judgment, assuming that, underneath the angry, harsh words, it wants only good for me. It's not out to destroy me. What happens, after you listen enough with this accepting attitude, is this: the "critic" turns out to be scared, worried, and relatively powerless. Your relationship to it changes. You see it for what it is, and you can begin to be tender with it. It becomes an ally.

Anyway. I hope your work with your inner critical voices is going well!

Lerissa,

Fascinating work you are doing, thank you for sharing it with me. I will be sure to check out your website so I can learn more about the process.

My struggle with my inner critic, I feel, is going well. I am listening to her less and developing a better understanding of how to manage her while still listening to the deeper messages behind her often harsh words.

Thank you for taking the time to share your work with me. I wish you the best with it.

Tara
