Just an idle thought to keep this site going this week: do people who exhibit so-called “workaholic” tendencies inevitably end up out of touch with the the latest goings-on?

I think they do. I don’t see a way around it.

One of the first things people sacrifice when they get overwhelmingly busy is their intellectual curiosity and inventiveness. When you’re stressed, you stop learning, and just start relying on the things you already know

All good ideals to strive for - but not during a recession.

Employers are going to look for more productivity out of each worker now more than ever.

While one could often make the case that creativity can improve productivity over the long haul, those who burn the proverbial midnight oil will be perceived - fairly or unfairly - as the people with the highest value to companies, and perception is often more important than reality when trying to hold on to your source of income.

I think you've got it wrong. People usually don't "work too much" because they have to. They do it because the want to. Or, at least, they are getting something out of it. It may be a sense of accomplishment, a sense of self-worth, a sense of purpose. As a programmer, I may complain about constantly fixing stuff my users mess up, but having the skill to do that is a big part of my identity. I'm the "fix-it" guy in my particular area of expertise.

So sure, it's ok to take a break sometime. But accept that some people may just work a lot because they like their job.

@Scott

They have a word for that - it's called passion.

Passion usually translates to results, which then translates to the reason a company would keep you.

Matt, I experience workaholic's syndrome, but I think of things way different. In order to be successful tomorrow, we have to sacrifice today, which forces us to be workaholic's. We get out of life what we put in and being a workaholic isn't for everyone. I've lost touch with various things, but they weren't as important to me as my dreams.

It really depends on who you are and what you want to get out of life.

Good post topic.

From Harry Chapin:

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then
