Yesterday, I voted for Barack Obama as President of these United States.

Today, I am still awestruck that our America, with its racist history and the stain of that "peculiar institution" of slavery, has really elected an African American president for the first time ever.

I'm not even gonna front, I voted for Obama not just because I believe in his

The president elect should be elected based on his policies and what he can do for his country and not the color of his skin, his gender, his age, etc. Minorities are the majority of this country and I hope that Obama won on his merits and not his skin color. I agree with a lot of Obama's policies and strongly admire his leadership skills. I don't care that he's half black or half white. I don't care that he has a Muslim name while he's a Christian. I don't care whether he's a man or a woman, I care that he will do good for this country as a whole, not just the poor and not just the rich. I went to Business School, I care about the bottom line.

From one skinny black girl from Cleveland to another...

Beautifully written post. And oh so true. I never imagined that I would see this day in America come so soon. I can't even think of it without tearing up.

I can respect your point of view, and even your reason for voting for Obama. Even though I voted against him, I too am awestruck that he is President-Elect, as an African-American. It is quite an important, and positive accomplishment. But that is where my enthusiasm stops. Sadly, I still disagree with most of his policies.

Very moving.

I also voted for Obama, but because I have always voted Democrat I can't say his race was a factor. It was exciting, though, to vote for someone who looked like me, and this entire election experience was amazing, as both a woman and a minority. But if you listen to CNN, it actually wasn't anyway in the outcome.

I just hope, after there is proof in the whitehouse that the stereotypes constantly perpetuated on TV of minorities being something less than mainstream society, people will start to see more than just skin color. It would be amazing to have something that you didn't choose and can't help not held against you. It would be amazing if this is the catalyst that is needed for real change in perspective, so that people will not have a harder time for reasons that have nothing to do with who they are.

It's really awesome that racism that still exists in America did not prevent the best (imo) candidate from winning this election. It really shows an incredible growth of this county. I'm just a few days away from getting my citizenship, and I can't wait to be a "real" part of America.

I still think that Obama demonstrated exactly that - that you have to be extremely "articulate" and have the right "credentials" to succeed as a minority. Not to undermine McCain's campaign accomplishments, but it seems Obama had to work much harder. But this incredible victory is a giant step toward a society where minorities would not have to jump through rings of fire to succeed. Obama really showed people that you can be what you want to be inspite of the circumstances you were raised in.

I'm white. I voted for Obama for chnage, and part of that change is that he's black, and so I sort of voted for him because he's black also. Plus he's liberal:) But my hope is his presidency will help heal the racism in this country. I'm sure it means more to blacks, but it does mean a lot to me too.
