I’ve always been surprised at how many people decide to just up and leave a job after a week. They almost never arrange to leave in an appropriate way.
This past week we had a individual who had been applying for jobs with our agency for a year (literally a year) quit through an email sent to human resources one week in when he was scheduled to work the next day. Oh and in this email he tried to apply for another position (ha!).
Just because youR

Ha! I once supervised a temp worker (against my wishes) who, on his third day on the job, came over to inform me that he was applying for other, permanent jobs in the company and that he would help me "figure out" how to staff the project he had been hired to complete.
Um, what?
Needless to say, this did not please me or the company. He ultimately did not get hired on for any permanent positions.
What kind of people think that pulling these kinds of stunts are a good idea?

I see this at work all the time. Being in IT we're responsible for setting up new workstations and laptops for new hires, the initial process of getting all of the necessary equipment together can sometimes be a hassle depending on the requirements of the job, we go out of our way to set up everything on short order so it's unnerving then to find out a couple days later that the new hire has quit, all those hours spent getting the laptop ready wasted. We had one guy that left a yellow sticky note on his laptop "I QUIT!", his manager or HR had no clue where he went, he just got up and left! It's so bizarre. We had another similar incident with a long time fellow IT co-worker, one day we all came in and found his laptop and blackberry on his desk and we never saw or heard from the guy ever again, once again even his manager or HR has no idea what happened to him, even after numerous attempts to contact his wife. He simply vanished.
I don't know if it's undue stress that causes people to do this but it probably has at least something to do with it.
Then again, maybe the wrong people are being hired for the job and the new hire figures that they can't swindle their way into the hearts of fellow employees, or maybe they lied in the interview and come day one of the new job they figure it's really something that they can't do?

Obviously the problem with these people is the HR department. If they would just hire the right kind of people--the kind that don't do this--then the problem would go away.

The Office Newb - This is why most companies place a minimum on how many months you have to work before you can apply for another internal position. Of course that doesn't work with temps.
Jon C. - Your stress comment reminded me of an intern we recently took in last minute as a favor that left after two weeks (doing many things wrong along he way) and now a month later has sent a letter apologizing saying he was under emotional stress. Sorry letters aren't going to get you anywhere.
Chandler Bing - Nah, if HR did the hiring instead of the supervisors then this problem wouldn't exist. Or maybe just if people weren't stupid this problem wouldn't exist.

I forgot to add this link to my comment above:

It's a blog I wrote about the HR dept hiring all the wrong people for the wrong jobs. It seems to be a pandemic problem across all industries, or maybe it's just humanity showing it's true incompetent colours?

I agree. It is important to leave a job on good terms. I work at a staffing company, Hollister (www.hollisterstaff.com) and tell my clients that if they are unhappy with their job then they should first talk to their boss. From there if they don't like what their boss has to say then they should thank them for the opportunity and tell them they don't think the job will work out. Communication is important.

I agree with this post and the other commenters. What happens when you are hired for a seasonal position that you are unhappy with? Unhappy to the point that you are not getting enough hours and are having difficulty paying rent. The problem here is that I can not afford to work inconsistent hours for another two weeks to give proper notice. Does anyone have any suggestions?
