I used to be afraid of flying. Deathly afraid. Dear-god-I-might-throw-open-the-emergency-exit-before-takeoff, let-me-out-of-this-thing afraid.
It’s been 18 months since I’ve last flown. Before that, I got tanked to get on a plane. We’re talking lots of booze and pills to make it possible. Like, where-am-I-again drunk. Obviously, I don’t have that luxury anymore. And because I

How about this for leaning into your fear?
Afraid of heights. (Moderate Acrophobia)
Get sent to jump school and become a paratrooper.
Jump at night with hundreds of people shooting up at you with murderous intent.
Get hit in the flak vest twice.
Come away with bruises.
Almost get over fear.
See someone directly in front of you free fall to death with defective chute during training jump.
Get dragged back on plane and sent back up again for another training jump within 3 weeks to prove to self that fear will not dominate your life.

Leaning into fear reminds me a lot of the trust falls we used to do at the leadership retreat when I was on the sorority exec. The first time we closed our eyes and leaned back, it was terrifying because we were actively testing the trust we said we had for each other but we were also testing our ability to make smart decisions. But after we survived that first lean, we wanted to do it again. And then it started to be fun.
Great post Holly!

This is a great post! I, too, am scared s#$tless of flying, but I try to calm myself by remembering that immense sense of accomplishment when I enter the terminal of my final destination.
I also talk to the flight attendants frequently (once per every flight). This may annoy them, but their comforting words help me so much. The best analogy I heard: "This turbulence is like driving down a bumpy dirt road. It's not dangerous, it's just uncomfortable".
Thanks for a great post! I'm going to check out EDMR.

I think this post has great relevance for anyone and everyone, because no matter who you are, you are afraid of something, maybe a lot of somethings.
One of my friends gave me this same advice a few years ago after visiting a therapist for his intense fear of driving. I've been following this strategy of leaning into some of my fears lately, and it's paying off in spades.
Very insightful, Holly. I always enjoy your writing.

What a great blog! Congratulations to you in conquering your fear of flying. It is amazing how many people have this fear which can create career limitations. Thanks for sharing with us, it is an inspiration!
