In my first job, I worked with a big healthcare client. They had built a new building and spared no expense. We worked with them to create a unique, powerful online community for their patients to communicate with doctors, staff, and each other. They would maintain an online journal (before the word blog was popular) and customize their experience. It

Very good point. I think of social media as another thing I do with me time. And participating in any online community as participating in any "physical" community. You have to make a commitment to be a regular and active participant to really get something out of it.

Chas, I think this raises a great point. Ultimately the networks that give you the most value will be the networks that you use. I have hundreds of "connections" on LinedIn, yet I login only to accept those connections. There is no value for me their. On my blog, I can connect with people that are on the same level as I am. On Twitter I have built a network on likeminded people that interact with each other.
It boils down to what makes sense for you. Go where your conversations are, not where everyone tells you that you should be!

Each participant in a given social networking group might have a different motivation. Some use them to keep in touch with friends while others might see them as a means by which to stay in prospective employers' or clients' radar.
Once you are clear on your win, you can optimize how you use the chosen vehicle. All have an outgoing notification service of new entries which minimizes your need to check in.
The most important aspect of using any digital community is to mind your manners. Understand anything you say and any pictures you post can/will be seen by prospective employers, mates and your mother.

Excellent comments... I particularly like Greg's advice: "go where your conversations are."
