One of these days, you’re going to start to hate me. First, I tell you that your clutter hates you., and now I’m trying to make the case that your Stuff is screwing you over.

Of course, there’s stuff, and then there’s Stuff. Stuff is useful, and it’s pretty hard to get anywhere in life without a bit of it. Stuff, with the capital

I am trying to limit my "stuff." My family has a hard time throwing away childhood memories-- so somewhere tucked away are the Thanksgiving pictures I drew in first grade. Exactly, stuff.

Now, though, more of my "stuff" is digital. Pictures are all online and papers are stored on the computer. Hopefully technology will limit the amount of stuff floating around.

The stuff you give eventually becomes the stuff you get.

My husband and I have a policy that we don't give gifts of "stuff" unless we someday want that stuff to end up in our home. We watched that situation unfold when my grandparents went to a nursing home and didn't want throw anything out so now all of it is sitting in my parents' basement.

It is the unexpected way to be screwed over by stuff later in life.

Great Post, Sara!

I'm lucky in that I was trained well by a great "purger," my mom...I find immense joy in culling through closets to decide what needs to be donated and then organizing what I've got. The husband tends more to the pack-rat model, so its an ongoing balance between the two of us.

We've chosen to live in a small condo, which really helps in learning to be a conscious consumer. We always have to stop and think whether we really "need" something before it comes home with us. I refuse to give in to "stuff" and get a storage locker somewhere like most of my friends, so we live with what we've got, and keep it streamlined.

@Dorie - I love your gifting policy - very smart! I'm going to have to think about that!

Great!

I am in the process of measuring what STUFF I need to dispose of. Recently, while budgeting for 2009, I noticed that I have a few "things" that I pay monthly fees for, that I don't need at all.. What a waste of money and space..Although some people would consider my BMW a luxury and token of success; I see it as a waste of $400/month. I'm proud to say it is on the market and I am now looking to buy a used Honda Accord.

Good-bye to the Joneses in me!
