Hey Kristina. You are totally not alone with your feelings of questioning how much is too much, online. I was reminded just last week that maybe I shouldn't post on my blog articles about how I'm thinking of leaving my job for fear of someone at my job reading it or a potential employer. I got kind of annoyed because my blog is my way of looking outside of myself and analyzing life. So it made me think of how useless it is to even have a blog if you're writing to please others. Anyhoot, I decided to make my blog more anonymous in terms of excluding any information that linked directly to me. My first name is pretty common and I never included my last name.

It can be frustrating to have to second guess a great post from the heart when you know the wrong person may stumble upon it and take it the wrong way. It always makes me think about expression and creativity, two things that everyone wants but not everyone is willing to accept as is.

Kristina,

I think about this “transparent life” online a lot. I have realized, however, that we (the bloggers, the twitter-users, the facebookers) are the gatekeepers. We personally control what the world knows about us.

It depends on your comfort level and what you want out of your social media use. There is a dichotomy between personal and business types of blogs. I strive to be in the middle.

I've been thinking about this a lot as well. Some people can be really successful at living a completely transparent life, and sharing everything online (just look at Penelope Trunk) but most of us wouldn't feel that comfortable sharing that level of detail about our lives online. It's definitely a fine line to manage, I think. You don't want to get to the point where you project a completely different persona online, but you don't want to be too transparent online either in case it comes back to hurt you...

@Tiffany - Thanks for the comment - you are exactly right about the job thing. I work for a pretty conservative boss so I always wonder how I am being perceived, and if what I say may come back to haunt me. I hate to compromise my writing, but I am much more aware of how I come across these days.

@Carla - I am pretty comfortable with my life being online, just not when it put other's at risk, like my kids. Thanks for the comment.

@Nisha - well said. I don't think I am quite at the level that Penelope is, I admire her greatly though for being able to hang it all out there for better or worse.

I've been preaching the same sermon for years now and it never ceases to amaze me that many young people still throw caution to the wind until they themselves become a victim.

Nobody wants to believe that it can happen to them. Well it can ... and it will. So don't wait until it's too late.

Thanks for the link Kristina and stay safe.
