In pledging to inject $250 billion dollars directly into financial institutions today, President Bush remarked that the move was done: “not to take over the market, but to preserve it.”

Preserve it? Why? Because if we do not preserve the free market we might have a catastrophic financial collapse?

Sounds like you might be on the verge of a breakdown. And you are not the only one. I am relatively confortable with my financial situation, but it could easily turn around for me with ONE unexpected large expense. I agree that the government should be doing something to help us individuals out instead of putting all of our hope in the hands of the bankers that run the world. We NEEDlower priced housing, food, and healthcare (the three NECCESSITIES sp? of life) as long as we have those, we can be comfortable. Your cell phone bill, internet, cable, video games, car etc. are all VERY important too and no one wants to give them up but we may soon be forced to...

I REALLY HOPE I DONT HAVE TO GIVE UP MY VIDEO GAMES AND INTERNET but i am completely open to giving up my car.

"Hide your money yall, there's poor people round." Chappelle Reparations episode.

Seriously though, getting you back on your meds sounds like a national security issue.

Tim - If things are that bad, you should contact the Illinois Dept. of Human Services for help:

http://www.dhs.state.il.us/page.aspx?item=27894

or call (800) 843-6154

They should be able to provide some direction if you can find relief with hardship assitance to pay bills, etc.

@Anonymous-

Please....if you are in a financial pinch so bad that you have to choose between housing, health care and food versus cell phones, internet and video games, are the gadgets really THAT important?

@Tim -

While I do sympathize with you being down on your luck (been there before more times than I care to count), know that in the end the best solution for you is to find it within yourself to get that next job. Not even my choice for the White House, Mr. Obama is going to be able to rescue anyone having problems today soon enough. There will be no bailout for consumers.

Jobs will come and go as will peaks and valleys in our economy. If there is one thing GenY I think will have great difficulty adjusting to is what life is like when things get tough. They grew up primarily in boom economic times and have been accustomed to a life where tough choices and sacrifices were really not part of the deal.

What needs to be remembered is that life needs to go on no matter how good or bad things are. Being flexible enough (and prepared enough) for dealing with the low points will allow you to leverage high points to cushion you down the road.

Perspective time: in 1982, unemployment was at 10.8%, inflation was 13.5%, and the prime rate reached a peak of 21.5%. This was my post-college introduction to the real world, but I made it through.

You will too.

Hang in there and go find that next job - they are out there.

Hint: - the health care industry is always hiring people with a diverse collection of talents.

@Milena- you mean... you think a government agency can help me? What's the world coming to???

@Steve- I am not worried about finding a job, long-term. What I'm worried about is right here and now. Last Wednesday I got a pretty nice gig writing ads for a car title loan company- on Friday the company nearly went belly up- and on Sunday the boss e-mailed all of the people he just brought on and told them they had to let them go. That kind of instability threatens not just my job prospects, but the financial well-being of the entire nation.

@Anonymous- I already gave up the video games and I'm down to drinking just 3 nights a week :(

@Scott- sarcasm doesn't come across very well on the internet. If you want to say something snarky, you should be more direct. If your intention was to imply that I'm imbalanced, well, duh.

However, the medication I'm referring to is Veramyst- which is 80 bucks a pop, even with insurance.

@Tim - Yeesh. I was just trying to be helpful. Whatever.

Just because I don't think government provides the best quality services doesn't mean I think they don't exist or shouldn't be utilized when you've already paid for them.

With the current economic crisis a lot more people will be loosing their jobs and as I have said before we all need to be prepared. The future of working for large company's is not likly to be a reality, entrepreneurial enterprises are the future. But how do we prepare now: pay off all outstanding bills while you still have an income then start cutting back. First check when all contracts are due to expire, cancel as soon as possible and move your life onto cash only. Cancel that expensive cell phone contract for a pre paid like Tracfone or Net 10 and have a long look at the land line, do you really use it, what about skype? I recommend a cell phone over a land line according to The Sullivan report the cell is more important in an emergency and is better for business.
