I’m voting for Obama.  I wrote about that decision a bit back in March.  With 1/3 of voters turning in their ballots early, I wanted to reiterate why I’m voting for Obama.

"I like his tax plans, focus on community service, health insurance plan"

Would that be the same tax plan that is designed to keep the lower class in the lower class tax bracket? According to the Wall Street Journal this morning: "Some families with an income of $40,000 could lose up to 40 cents in vanishing credits for every additional dollar earned from working overtime or taking a new job. As public policy, this is contradictory. The tax credits are sold in the name of "making work pay," but in practice they can be a disincentive to working harder, especially if you're a lower-income couple getting raises of $1,000 or $2,000 a year."

You mean the "do as I say, not as I do" approach? He hasn't done any since he was a member of ACORN, and Biden sure as hell doesn't do any. In fact if you want to look at charity donations as well, Biden only donated $300 to charity last year...you wanna know how much Cheney donated? His whole salary. I even donated more than twice what Biden did last year!

I think this one sums up his healthcare:
9/21/08 Boston Globe headline "Worlds apart on healthcare: Obama's Plan Superior, similar to Mass. State Plan"
9/22/08 Boston Globe Headline "Across Mass., wait to see doctors grows: as long as 100 days to see primary care doctors in Mass."

"and he surrounds himself with others equally prepared to lead in their specialties."

Would those be the same people he has surrounded himself with in his campaign so far?
His chief financial supporter was Tony Rezko, now on his way to prison. His spiritual adviser was the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, of “God damn America” fame. And the guy who got him his only administrative job is unrepentant domestic terrorist Ayers...

"Obama will be put in office by the people, and you best believe we’ll be holding him and Congress accountable."

Would those be the same people who have held Congress accountable for the last 2 years? When the Democratically controlled congress has done nothing except put a $700 billion bailout burden on OUR shoulders? And their approval rating is at a historical low... if you think the Bush's approval rating is low... well at least he has never dipped below 20%.

"more than 2 million Americans have donated"

Would those be the same "Americans" who live in the Gaza strip, and ordered over $40,000 in T-shirts, then placed an additional $20,000 donation to the campaign? The same "Americans" who raised over a million dollars at a dinner for Obama in Nigeria?

Some of this stuff cracks me up.

He’ll be using facts and rational thought not ideology to make decisions

Haha, right. Someone who has voted with his party 97% of the time isn't using ideology?

Much like he welcomes opinions from all sides, the Supreme Court should be a balanced representation of the people.

What evidence to you have for this? Again, he may say he welcomes opinions from all sides but he doesn't act on it. I have a feeling that the Supreme Court will go left and I think his voting record shows that's what he'd prefer.

Obama will be put in office by the people, and you best believe we’ll be holding him and Congress accountable.

With Democratic majorities likely in both the Senate and House, exactly HOW do the people plan to hold them accountable? We have seen the issues with having a single party hold both the legislative and executive branches up close and personal yet you somehow believe the people will hold them accountable? Democrats are set to make gains in congress and what exactly have they done with their majority? Bent over backwards for Bush! What do you think they will do for a leader they actually like? Accountability indeed!

@ Daniel

a couple valid points, but you lost me when you tried to make Dick Cheney sound like a selfless martyr. "His whole salary"

Cheney is an evil, unethical person, there's not much debating that. If he donated his entire salary, I would like to know who he donated it to, just out of curiosity.

And don't kid yourself in thinking that Cheney is the newest member of habitat for humanity, he donated his salary because taxpayers are likely funding his other ventures and revenue generators. You shouldn't judge people by how much they give to charity. I'm sure you can agree that if charities weren't able to give tax receipts there would be a lot less "good will".

otherwise you had a lot of interesting talking points, I wish you would have left links for some of them

@Mike, I didn't leave links b/c I thought it was already too long, but here you go:

I don't think Cheney is evil, you may not agree with some of the decisions he has made but to call him evil? That's a bit extreme. And I must say the point I'm trying to make is that it is a fact that republicans donate more to charity than Democrats. My personal theory is that Democrats live in a dillusional world where the Gov't works flawlessly and helps everyone, so Dem's don't feel the need to give. Republicans are more realists and know that the gov't will F* everything up, so we feel the need to donate to private organizations where our money will be put to good use. Case in point, who does a better job: FEMA or the Red Cross?

While I can't easily find his most recent tax returns, here is a description of his '06 returns. A simple google search yielded: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1615415/posts

WSJ article "Obama's 95% Illusion" http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122385651698727257.html

The Healthcare articles:
Worlds apart on healthcare: Obama's Plan Superior, similar to Mass. State Plan

Across Mass., wait to see doctors grows: as long as 100 days to see primary care doctors in Mass.

On the voter fraud, A simple Google search should yield thousands of results.

There are +/- on the policy plans of both candidates. I think the good outweighs the bad. . . as I've pointed out the laws that pass aren't going to look much like that policies being pitched to us now.

McCain also donated his whole salary to charity, since he has a sugar mamma to buy him houses and cars. Cheney and Bush have been helping their war profiteering buddies for 8 years, he can afford to write off his lowly public service salary because his golden ticket is likely already written.

Do you translate community service into writing checks for charity? Writing a check isnt community service. Fundraising for a cause you care about, canvassing neighborhoods, mentoring an underpriviliged kid. . . I call those activities community service.

The years of community organizing Obama did is more than most will do in their lifetimes. That he and the Mrs. focused on paying off student loans, paying a mortgage, and likely saving for the educations of their daughters. . . it seems their priorities are in order.

Biden worked as a public defender for several years early in his career, so he actually has dedicated some of his time to community service as well.

What have you done for your community?

Obama's economic advisors

obama health care advisors

It's interesting that you bring up ACORN, seeing as McCain has supported their efforts publicly until it was politically expedient not to.
http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/10/a_lifetime_ago_sen_...

Or that McCain supports terrorism in America, when that terrorism is in the name of an issue he supports
http://www.feministing.com/archives/011586.html

If you compare candidates -- Obama is much closer to full disclosure on donations than McCain
http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/summary.php?cycle=2008&cid=N00006424

I believe the Obama campaign returned the donation you brought; McCain has had to do the same with questionable bundled donations. . . from SoCal I believe.

Are you part of the 10% of America that thinks the US is on the right track? You just seem exceptionally bitter.

Michael/Daniel
Cheney is evil. He's part of the team that approved torture in complete violation of international law. He's part of the team that has approved of denying habeas corpus to enemy combatants and prison conditions that are literally driving uncharged, unprosecuted detainees insane. That's evil.

Now that this average article/talking points has devolved into a pissing contest over community service, I remind you that John McCain served his community for over 22 years. I also remind you that over 5 of those years were the ultimate service and sacrifice for his country.

Scott,
My post isn't about community service. It's about temperment and personality and intellect mostly. I merely stated that I liked Obama's call for more community service.

If you're going to go waving the POW card. . .
Let me preface the following remarks by saying that I commend McCain for his five + years a POW, many vets come back broken from that experience and he went on to a career in politics.

The reality is that the man graduated near 5 from the bottom out of 800+ students. He made it into the piloting program because of his father's connections not because of aptitude, further evidenced by the, I believe, 5 planes he crashed (several of them in training). And yet they let him fly again and again. He spent his military career chasing daddy's coat tails. I don't find those points so commendable.

Perhaps I missed something, but isn't this article called "Why I'm Voting Obama." I didn't see anything saying "Why You Should Vote Obama."

Why is it that if people disagree with our views, we automatically assume that there's some knowledge we're privy to that they may not have. It's clear that Andrea has done enough homework to make an informed decision. A decision that is hers and hers alone, mind you.

Both candidates have pluses and minuses and it's our job as voters to weigh those that matter against that don't matter so much to us and cast our vote.

Basically do what you do, but don't knock the next person for doing the same.
