Nobody wants to admit that they hired the person because they liked them better, but later there are better than expected results.

In Oregon, you get a pretty reliable indicator that election season is almost over: A voter’s education guide that is the size of the phonebook a week before you receive your ballot in the mail. I am not joking when I say that I received booklet one of two total in the mail on Friday. Oregonians love to put a few thousand meas

We have an HR person on our Board and he also was the one to hire me for my position. He said that he wished he could take candidates out the bar for a drink as that proved who they really were. It does make a lot of sense. :)

I think this idea does make a workplace less diverse because people are just more comfortable with people who look like them. If I had a dollar for every time someone was suprised that we had something in common because of (a) gender or (b) race I would not have any student debt. I swear, it seems like people are suprised that someone of another race/gender is human. Even though it is utterly disturbing, I get to see the "us" and "them" mentality a lot in my line of work. I thank God all you can tell is that I am a female over the phone. Comfort must be probed, and not encouraged.

I'm not arguing comfort though. I am arguing likability which, as I state in my post, is different at work than it is in your personal life.

The type of person you like at work is probably different than the type of person you go out with on weekends. You want competent people that you can get along with. I wouldn't hire some of my friends and I wouldn't hang out on the weekends with some people from work.

And like I also said, if you have a feeling that you like someone better for the position than the other, you should investigate it (not accept it or reject it as a rule).
