I shouldn’t be in grad school.

Ok, technically I am in school. And I thought long and hard about my decision. The fact is, I never wanted to go.  I wanted to dive into the workforce from undergrad.  I wanted to head straight to New York City, into a corporate office, and work my way up to the top.

I have always been a hard-working, practical person. I was always the “planner” in my group of friends-organized and keenly aware of the people’s needs around me.

So I had a plan: New York. And no one gets in the way of a twenty something heading to New York.

Casually looking online during the summer of 2007, I found my current grad program. I couldn’t believe there was a curriculum that fit all of my needs for furthering my education- a hands-on program focusing on the global marketplace.

But I didn’t want to let it interfere with THE plan. New York. Big office. My vision of early twenty-something life.

But I couldn’t help it; I was drawn to the program web page every couple of days. I started to develop a passion for the program and for the opportunities, places and people I would meet. So, I worked really hard- I took the GREs twice, revised my resume countless times and spoke to every quasi professional about my options. Despite the attempts I made at convincing myself,  I was still scared about straying from my plan.

Then I realized-

Life is not a plan.

You make your own opportunities.

Do what you want to do.

Under one rule: Live with passion.

So, I shouldn’t be in grad school. But it’s ok, because I am loving it. I am learning so much, branding myself, my work, making contacts and lifelong friendships from people all around the world in a city that I would have never explored.

Plans are only in pencil, it’s ok to erase.

I had so many plans when I graduated college, and I had the perfect job to kick them all off. Of course life had plans of it's own though. Of course! Enjoyed your post :)

Why limit yourself to a corporate office when there is so much more out of life. Sounds like you are just another in the heard of sheep transplanting themselves to big cities. It's ok, plenty of bar ownwers like me are taking your money on the weekend.

From the great movie "Kicking and Screaming" (the 1995 Noah Baumbach movie, not the 2005 Will Ferrell one):

How do you make God laugh? Make a plan.

Of course you should be in grad school. You're there and you're loving it! Plans don't always work out, because as we grow up, we change and we want different things. I know that when I came to Boston and met you last week, you seemed right at home, and that's all that matters.

Maybe you'll end up in New York in a year or maybe your life will take another turn and you'll end up in a random city in the Midwest like me :)

Big NYC office in your early 20's? I know I-bankers in NYC that make a quarter mil a year and they are still rockin cubicles.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

This post isn’t about whether grad school was the right decision for me- it is. I am loving school, where I am and what I am learning. My ideas stemmed from learning how to “go with the flow” and take me where the opportunity arises. But it took some time for me to realize that.

@Rebecca- Life can throw you in many directions- I’m slowly learning. Thanks for the support!

@Chad- I’m not limiting myself. I had a certain mindset of success and where I wanted to be. But I am realizing that my life and career can include several parts and cities.

@Aaron- Exactly what I wanted this post to say. Thanks.

@Ryan Healy- I know I am supposed to be where I am, and I am thankful for that. Wherever the next step takes me, that’s where I go. All I know is I’m going to try my best and take it from there.

@Pare- Thanks!

@Scott- Just a vision. Cubes or office, doesn’t matter to me. As long as I am passionate about what I am doing and the life I am living, I can be wherever.

It's also ok to rewrite, redraw, and scribble/doodle every once in a while.
