I didn't really get Twitter until I started reading about it in various trade magazines. On a lark, I started an account for my company to be used as an e-mail alert system with short headlines and links to press releases, events, etc.
I think it can be a really valuable marketing tool in terms of immediate outreach to customers, and I got a surprisingly large following in just the first few weeks with zero press on the main company website.

There's a lot of people that swear by Twitter, and a lot of companies reaping the rewards by using tit wisely as customer feedback. I'm still finding my place on there, but enjoying it at the same time as one of the 'prettier' IM / microblogs / status updating tools out there.
I agree that they are kinda onto something with the election portal and that there's something brewing for the future.
