I spent too much of my time abroad longing for familiarity. I was unhappy due to forces beyond my control. I didn't live in the moment. Not as much as I could have.
Three years ago, as I prepared to move to London for four months to study abroad, I got a text message from my then good friend Sarah (unfortunately, we’ve all but lost touch). It said, “remember to live in the moment and grow where you’re planted.” It was great advice, though I didn’t

I love your posting, because living in the moment is something I still struggle with day to day, as I think so many people do. I had a similar experience when I did a study abroad program in Australia. It was such an amazing experience, but it wasn't until the end of the trip, and even more so once I returned home, that I realized I was so busy pining for familiarity that I missed a lot of what was right in front of me. I was younger, lacking some of the experiences I have had now, but I still feel bad and wish I could have been more present! Thanks for the entry- it's something we all should take a moment to think about before getting sucked into the daily grind of monotony!

I couldn't agree more. It's easy to forget when you're caught up in the day-to-day minutiae of a busy life. But the present is where we truly live our lives -- not dwelling in the past or pondering the future.
Sometimes I lose site of that -- as I'm sure do lots of other people -- but I try to appreciate the present as much as possible.
Great post!
