We were curious as to how many Facebook users actually use their real first and last names for their profiles. And when we are curious about something here at Entrustet, it can only mean one thing: blog post! So some of us went through our Facebook friends lists and kept track of the number of friends using fake names for their Facebook profiles. Our sample size was relatively small, but it’s still a good gauge of an answer to the question: how many people use fake names on Facebook?

I gave my first talk on goal-setting at a bookstore last week and I bombed. My friends and family might tell you otherwise…and several people said afterward that they really got something out of it, but in my heart and gut I know that I bombed. No amount of excuses – tired, busy, just starting out – could make up for how lame I felt. And by lame, I mean totally and utterly disappointed in myself.

I’ve been thinking a little bit about conferences lately. It’s no secret that I love a good conference, unconference, meetup or tweetup. There’s just something about this social gal that enjoys meeting and greeting, dressing up, cruising the booths and drinking sponsored booze. But conferences are more than that. Having been part of organizing several myself and working with others who do so, I know the amount of work that goes into conferences (and unconferences). It’s a TON of work. In this day of full time connectivity, smart phones, online communities, microblogging, face time and Skype, why are we still so eager to pack a bag, jump on a plane, get a hotel room and spend 2, 3,4 days in social “go mode”?

This is an interesting time for women in business right now. You have great leaders who are impacting the world, but they live in environments where the negative stereotypes make it impossible to realize the progress. You can still find the early pioneers, making the way for women behind them. Some may have had to become “one of the guys” just to gain a little attention. Others were the ceiling breakers who worked hard to make that ladder longer. You have generations of women who bullied others, especially if they took the attitude of, “I got here on my own, you can too.”

I have been thinking a lot about responsibility and “owning it” these days. It’s the kind of headspace I’m in at the moment. Then I read (as happens rather serendipitously) this post by Elisa about being the author of your own life. I noted that beyond anything else, the overarching theme in such posts has been the concept of accountability. In other words, owning your actions and taking responsibility for the trajectory of your own life.
