I went to the Chicago New Media Summit on last Monday and Tuesday… but I didn’t do it the traditional way. By that, I mean I didn’t pay… and I figured out how to make yourself the luckiest person at the conference. Here are a few tricks I learned that worked great:

Andy, you make some great points. I've long believed that there were multiple ways to "work" a conference, and that they didn't all require paying a large registration/admission fee. I've had great experiences working a conference as a volunteer, particularly when I can get close to the speakers. Other time, I have worked a conference "virtually", by talking to lots of the speakers before the conference, and then again after the conference. I get all the conference highlights, without the associated time and travel costs of attending.
