We all have a bad day at the office once in a while. But it’s not usually quite this bad. Here’s ten of the worst cubicle meltdowns ever – look out for computer abuse, shameless videoing by colleagues, jumping on desks, furniture attacks, and heroic attempts at stopping – or ignoring – the people who are having a complete and utter freak out.

Meltdown #1

That guy in the middle of your office, who seems pretty quiet but occasionally rocks back and forth on his office chair? Never, EVER, touch the papers in his drawer. Some colleagues quietly escape through the far door, but most stay and watch as this man’s rampage finally ends when he’s taken down by a colleague, resulting in a fight behind a desk…

Meltdown #2

Ever wanted to smack some sense into your computer? It’s not clear what this man’s machine has done to wind him up, but when a slap to the monitor fails to knock it into line, he hammers the keyboard onto the desk – then swings at the monitor, knocking it out of his cubicle before giving it a good kicking.

Meltdown #3

There’s nothing more infuriating than a printer malfunction. And maybe this guy can be excused for going crazy when his attempted fix results in the printer spewing a cloud of ink at him. But why does his innocent monitor and the photocopier get the kicking, with the printer escaping unscathed?

Meltdown #4

Don’t want to make an idiot out of yourself? Ignore “friends” in the office who show you a great site then get you to “watch real closely” for something to happen… especially when they’re filming you.

Meltdown #5

Judge for yourself whether the jerk on the right deserves what he gets after he finally gets the colleague opposite him to snap. The greatest thing is that the others carry on their phone conversations as though nothing’s happening, even while the jerk’s being beaten with a keyboard…

Meltdown #6

(This looks very staged, but it’s no less funnier for that.) If you’re nervous about public speaking, you’ll cringe as you watch QA manager, Dave, blather away for several minutes when he’s asked to go first in a video conference. Watch right to the end, because the last couple of lines are hilarious.

Meltdown #7

This clip’s short, sweet, and oh so funny. If you’ve ever thought of photocopying your ass, this will make you seriously think again. Especially if your ass is a bit on the large side…

Meltdown #8

Do you have a really annoying telephone manner? Be honest, now, especially if you ring your friends and laugh down the phone while you’re in the office. You might just be about to drive one of your colleagues into a full-blown meltdown.

Meltdown #9

This guy objects to seeing someone puffing on a cigarette in the bathroom. It doesn’t look like meltdown material at first … until he grabs a fire extinguisher and takes forceful action.

Meltdown #10

Filmed on a dodgy handheld camera (probably someone’s mobile), this starts mid-freakout. One man is on a full-blown office rampage, grabbing and throwing monitors. A few colleagues try to intervene and succeed in yanking him down from a desk at the one minute mark. Sadly, security shows up, and the cameraman is forced to stop…

Number one is fake. It was done for something, I don't remember what, but you'll notice when he picks up the computer... there are no cords ;).

This is the time of year when, every time the phone rings here at Veritas Prep HQ, there's a good chance it's an applicant calling to ask us if he should apply to business school in the third admissions round, or if he should wait until next year. The answer, as is the answer for most things in life, is "It depends."

Personal Branding

There has been a great deal written about how to engage with social media to establish a name for yourself online, but a commonly overlooked piece of the puzzle is also one of the simplest: owning your own domain name. A domain name complements the rest of your online presence through branding using yourname.com or a similar variation.
