If I search for your name in Google, will the results actually be about you?

The hallmark of a strong personal brand online is the ability to be found when someone searches for you on the web.

Hi Pete,

Great post!!! I liked the Excel sheet

You wrote about the importance of creating profiles on major social networks and directories as a first step to ensure you can be found on Google. However the main purpose of all the services you mentioned is social networking.

I use a new service, called LookupPage (www.lookuppage.com) which aims exactly to that niche. This service in not a social network like LinkedIn or Ziki, but designated for professional users who want to create a web page of their own, that will be visible in all search engines.

LookupPage is free, but there is also a possibility to upgrade and get your own domain (you don't have to pay for that) with sponsored listing to make sure you are found whenever you name is being searched on Google. In addition, you can learn exactly who your visitors are and what search terms they enter in search engines to find you.

For example, you can Google my name or search my name in Yahoo to see that my LookupPage is the first result :-)

Cheers,

Udi Drezner

Hello Pete,

I love your idea of interlinking web profiles and using excel to track it. I agree it should provide a very good strategy to drive online visibility. Great advice for building an online brand! Also, it might be helpful to share one other option....for professionals who can’t wait out the time it takes for search engines to organically display their online profiles on page one of listings (sometimes weeks, and in some cases, never if your name is common), there is a short-cut alternative.

Anyone who has a free Ziggs Profile can catapult their name with a link to their Ziggs Profile to a premium position in Google search results within 24 hours (top or near-top), with the help of Ziggs. From there, we’ll manage your premium listing for you across every search engine. It’s less than five bucks per month to add this service to your free profile at Ziggs, so it’s a no-brainer to try it out.

In addition, every time someone clicks and finds your Ziggs Profile on the web, Ziggs automatically sends you an instant alert, letting you know the keywords used to find you, the location of the searcher, the time the search occurred and search engine used. It’s a good idea to know how often you’re being found online today, and this free service from Ziggs helps you keep your fingers on the pulse of search activity to your name.

I hope this info is helpful to your audience and supportive of your post. Feel free to drop me an email with any comments or questions. Thanks for your great blog work. Keep it up.

Best,
Julia

Other than my LinkedIn profile & Facebook profile, nothing really comes up. However, given that (a) my last name is a very large suburb of Atlanta, and (b) there are a lot of geneology-based links with my same name (albeit someone in 1820), it's buried.

This is the time of year when, every time the phone rings here at Veritas Prep HQ, there's a good chance it's an applicant calling to ask us if he should apply to business school in the third admissions round, or if he should wait until next year. The answer, as is the answer for most things in life, is "It depends."

When I embarked on my blog journey last December, I thought of it as just an extension of who I was, professionally and personally. I also looked at the blog as a way of being creative. It’s become more than that to me and those of you that read this. My blog is now part of my personal brand.
