Woooah the New Yorker is far from the most liberal magazine in the country. There are a dozen more slanted, less well written mags out there. The Nation, the Progressive, Mother Jones to name a few.
There actually are a good number of people who view the Obamas like this. It’s a matter of being in the right (or wrong) social circles. My mom is what you’d call a values voter, hardcore Evangelical conservative. She gets e-mails on a daily basis calling Obama a muslim, Michelle a black nationalist, and so on.
They are out there.
I’m sure there are more liberal mags than the NY - however, it’s right up there. My new favorite is “Good” - what a pile of dirt! I don’t think one of the writers has done an ounce of research.
Anyway, my point stands - I don’t believe a “principle conservative” is someone who would feed into this kind of disgust. I don’t deny there are crazies out there who think the Obamas are terrorists. Just like there are some whacked out liberals who think abortions are necessary to save the earth. Just because one nut has an idea, I’m not going to attribute it to the whole group.
